While the amount of revenue from shipping alcohol might be small I'm not convinced it's inconsequential. There are online businesses and brick & mortar stores shipping alcohol as well as traders.

A savvy, well managed business values it's dimes as well as it's dollars and sows good will whenever possible. Overall my experiences with FedEx have been very good, particularly on the local level. I not only continue to do business with them, I recommend them to others & help to build their reputation.

Additionally, when I'm shopping online & I'm given shipping options, I'm inclined to choose Fedex because of my many positive experiences with them.

Unfortunately, the laws & policies governing alcohol shipments are buried in rumor, conjecture, ignorance, 'superstition' & mystery. Cascade had to quit online sales & LetsPour was forced out of business. Similar businesses successfully continue to sell online & ship across state lines. Clearly the the relevant laws are poorly understood by damned near everyone.

A part of me yearns for clarity & consistency. Another part recognizes that might not be a good thing....

Were you able to file an insurance claim? Doesn't ground include $100 minimum insurance?

I did not even attempt to do so given it is against their policy to ship alcohol without be authorized. Figured the answer was no and anyway the total value of the beer was $15. Would be interested if others who have had boxes destroyed filed claims.

I have to wonder how thorough their notes are, I guess. If they destroy it but don't list that it was destroyed due to the contents being alcohol maybe you could take your receipt into your local office and play dumb.. "Hey, I sent a care package to my brother and for some reason it didn't show up."

If they say it got damaged or lost in shipping then you say it was worth $80 and collect. The worst they can do is say no and then give you a lecture on shipping policies, IMO.

Be patient. Might be nothing. Lots of weather issues out there right now I'm assuming.

These things definitely happen. I've had a bottle break in two different shipments. In one case, they opened the box, discarded the break, repackaged it in a new box and sent it back to me. In the other case, they asked me what was in the box (I said yeast samples) then they shipped it back to me unopened. I've certainly been lucky especially considering the two breaks were both just of extras.

Oh...well that's a little different then. There's a good chance it broke in transit and the shipper will be getting a call from fedex soon about it...OR...they just pack it back up and you get it tomorrow instead.

So, it's on the shipper, not the recipient? And would they flag my address or anything? The delivery date was changed to estimated Monday, from today. So I guess we will see. Thanks for the help so far you guys.

Well if you have a new delivery date, you might be good...

But yeah, it's on the shipper...for all they know you had no idea that box was coming your way...

Not sure why a carrier would care what you shipped as long as it's not dangerous or flammable. Pack it well, watch the weather and don't give them a reason to be curious. I'd bet most damaged beers were confiscated and stoken vs dumped as illegal.

    Isn't beer flammable?

No, the Abv needs to be on the Spirts range to burn. Beer is water mostly. I could see them caring if your shipping 100 proof vodka; and it's a federal restriction too.

I'm pretty sure if you thought about this you'd know why they care. For one as the transporter they breaking the law by shipping your beer....and we can go from there

Only if they knowingly ship it. They rarely ask what I'm shipping and if they do it's olive oil and ceramic art. Not sure how they're liable when they ship 16 million packages a day with no way to know or really enforce any rules.

    1) It's nowhere close to as simple as that, LOL. if you're a.member of the bar and would like to discuss this via pm.so we don't clog up this thread I'm happy to do that. No offense meant, but otherwise I find engaging in legal arguments with non lawyers to be very frustrating for me.

    2) if you're not one of the entitled, no offense meant. But it's none of your, mine, or anybody else's business why they prohibit shipping alcohol.

any more than its any of MY business why you won't let people smoke cigarettes in YOUR home.

It's a business. They own it, they set the rules. You don't want to follow the rules, don't do business with them or accept the consequences for breaking the rules when you get caught.

    it's really very simple.
