Was Magic Hat #9 better before NAB bought them out?

#9 is not something I would buy a lot of, but I thought it was alright.

Have to agree with a few on here that about 15 years ago when it first made it's way to me I loved the #9. Pete's Wicked was another as well, they have now become extinct. Those and Sam Adams were the first "craft" brews that started my long journey into the beer snob I have become. Probably will never buy another #9 ever again but can't knock something that forged my path.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. I knew #9 had a big following, but I'd never gotten around to trying it.

I wouldn't say I thought it was a poor beer, exactly, but I definitely couldn't see what all the fuss was about. I guess I was expecting something along the lines of a SNPA, but I ended up not really looking forward to finishing off the 6 pack.

Same for me. I remember drinking a few in someone's basement back in high school. I don't think it's a bad beer by any means, but if you don't care for that apricot flavor I can see how one wouldn't like it. It's been awhile since I've had one, though. As others have said, they make mostly average beers but I've certainly enjoyed some of their offerings (some of the rotating IPAs come to mind)

That's a great beer. I haven't had #9 yet, mostly because I know a lot of people say it's crap and also because it's everywhere. Literally every bar has it. Heart of Darkness is delicious. I thought Citrus Boy was bad though. Magic Hat is like the poor man's craft beer.

Either that or it tastes like fruit. Haven't seen any marketing directed specifically towards either sex. Women who don't generally like the taste of beer tend to enjoy beer that tastes like fruit. I know a bunch of dudes including myself who think it is a refreshing beer.

I love fruity beers, but in my opinion, #9 is garbage. Tastes like a BMC with underlying fake fruitiness. Ugh

i love the Humdinger series (Burn Pile, Graupel, Belgo Sutra being my favorite) and the Vermont only series is about experimentation, which is their "brand".. beers like Rousing Root (sweet potato beer) are kinda what their about. even though its not as wild as what rumors have it they were Before the NAB days, i respect that they're not afraid to put something out there that will push the boundaries out a bit. here in Vermont we have so many good breweries that you have a niche or you'll get lost in the crowd. every brewery has its own personality, i think Trout River is now the hippy beer by the way. Magic Hat is the "we'll put anything in beer once" brewery and from time to time they still surprise... as i sip some Magic Hat Elder Betty

    Nah, that's definitely Dogfish Head.

I don't care for anything I've had by Magic Hat, although I've only had #9, Hex, and Pistil. All three were pretty disappointing.

Magic Hat #9 takes a lot of shit on BA, but it holds a special place in my heart. Its still my go to music festival beer. Too many good memories to let it go. Plus IMO its a real good combination of flavor and sessionability. I can easily drink them all day long.

I have not been of legal age before Magic Hat was bought out, but now I have to say this stuff is crap.
