A friend is meeting me this week in Waterbury (Vermont) as I disembark from the Amtrak Vermonter; we have time for only one establishment in Waterbury. Of the top three - Prohibition Pig, Blackback Pub or Resevoir - which would be the best in terms of beer selection, food and ambience (in this order?) Of course, anyplace seriving Heady Topper would be nice.
3 of them are serving HT, and you can get some Hill Farmstead stuff and Lawson's finest too. I really enjoyed Prohibition pig, a bit classier than the other 2. Since the 3 of them are about 10 meters away from each other, you can just have a brew in each place, and see what's on the board.
I was at Prohibition Pig a few weeks ago and I can't even describe how good the service was. Great tap list, great food, Fucking amazing customer service.
Havent been to Prohibition but I would go there over the other two. Then Reservoir followed by Blackback.
Not a fan of the rez or blackback? Depends on what you're going for, Blackback is quiet and is my go-to. No tap not worth drinking.. The Rez is second on my list, but I'm a little bit biased. More taps than anywhere else, but some are definitely wasted. There is no shortage of awesome beers though. Prohibition Pig is awesome too, but I make it down there a lot less than the other two. No complaints about them, I just don't dig it as much as the other two.
I don't mind reservoir. Service is sometimes slow even when there arent many people but it's a nice place. The few times I've gone to Blackback I've had negative experiences. Dirty lines and overpriced, so-so food.
Only been to Prohibition Pig but it's our go to when up that way. Nice little place with a good tap selection and vegetarian options which is always a factor for me and the lady.
My 2 cents. #1 Prohibition Pig..Great beer selection(tap & bottle), great food, great service, great vibe. #2 Resevoir.. Very good tap selection, well prepared classic sports bar food, great service. Sports on TV! #3 Black Back.. Great tap selection, eclectic food, good service, small & chill vibe.
Black Back's food doesn't seem all that great. The first few times I went it was just sandwiches made by the bartender and last month it was only frozen pizzas and calzones.
Their food isn't their focus, and I don't think they really like having food. The frozen pizzas are from a local bakery though, and they have a sushi guy a couple nights a week. If you went there over a year ago, you might remember the little sushi spot next door. Blackback bought that spot and now that guy rolls sushi for them. It's about as good of sushi as you can get in Vermont. Its still not a huge draw, but it is nice to eat something besides those pizzas. Blackback is the spot to go if you want multiple Lawson's choices and more than a couple HF. I go to the rez if I'm hungry. Thankfully the rez has made some changes to the staff and their service has been better, as of late
Personally, my favorite is definitely the Blackback. Admittedly, I didn't eat and it didn't seem like a great place to do so. But the quirky, laid-back ambiance is quite a bit different (and preferable to me) from the Prohibition Pig, which feels like it was just renovated, which of course it was, and a bit too classy. I still liked it a lot and the burger I had at Prohibition Pig was fantastic, if a little on the pricier (but not overpriced) end. The beer list at all three was good on my visit a month ago, with Blackback the best (several taps of Lawson's and Hill Farmstead, each), Prohibition Pig second, and Reservoir third. If you have to eat somewhere, I guess I'd probably go with the Reservoir or Prohibition Pig, but I'd do all you can to squeeze in enough time to run across the street and grab a pint at the Blackback.
Blackback will have more Hill Farmstead and Lawsons on than the others. Typically they have whatever HF currently has on growler fill, plus 2-3 Lawson's Finest offerings. Reservior has a TON of beers, but...I'd rather have a dozen offers that are all outstanding. Pro-pig isnt bad either, but be prepared to spend some $$$ for the food. I've had everything off their bar snack menu and the only thing I thought was worth the money was the 'rinds.
Just go to all of them. PP is 50 feet away from Blackback. Reservior is about 100 feet away. For dinner, you can't go wrong at either PP or Res. For drinks, dip into all of them and check things out. Worth hitting all of them. I like Blackback's low-key, no frills vibe.
You could go to all three but The Blackback has the better tap list and it has a more down home laid back feeling ......
I will be at all three next Friday (July 13th) if anyone is looking for some beer you cant get in VT, let me know.
I love Blackback. It's a bar bar, and there are too few of those left. They all seem to have the same local taps though, as they get whatever is current. Exception Heady, for which you go to Pro Pig.
