Neat article and hardware. Can't say as I would ever have much use for somethings like those, as I can't remember the last time I bought a beer with wax over its closure.

The Bruery is including a whale shark with our RS membership next year. That thing looks like it will open all the waxed bottles pretty easily.

I already have a hacksaw and a cleaver, even a sabre should I choose to open something in the cavalry fashion.

It's funny that this article showed up on my FB feed today, because, I had a certain struggle with a gift bottle last night, an extremely tasty and lovely beer (one that I noticed @sharpski had checked in on Untappd back in the spring), the struggle was so real, that my Leatherman's serrated blade and I were going "WTF with this wax". Any of these would have been handy last night.

As an aside, I somehow got added to the Whaleslayer FB page recently. I'm a knife and gadget nerd, as well as a beer nerd, and some of his stuff is amazing. Check it out if you're into that kinda stuff. Dude does good work.

I use the opener below, and just open them as usual without cutting away the wax. The bottom lip just pushes through the wax and gets under the cap. Sometimes it slips off the first time, but always gets it by the second attempt. Wax is annoying though, completely pointless.

don't understand why more people don't just use a lighter to soften the wax a bit...no special opener required...

Love getting waxed bottles. Don't love opening them. If I can't get my regular opener to just push through the wax, I usually grab my kitchen shears (if I can find them). They have a built in bottle opener that forms four metal corners when you open the scissors a bit. I then close that around the bottle top, they dig into the wax, and I give it a twist.

if it is waxed i have a wine opener that has a cap remover on it as well. the teeth on mine are really sharp, easy to just push it in and rip the cap and wax off. never had an issue yet. Ain't pretty, but it gets the job done. Usually not saving waxed caps anyways.

Also the best wine opener I have ever used.

Similar to this. except mine is hinged to allow a bit more leverage on the cork and it has a pop out foil cutter that you just place on the file and twist and it cuts it, instead of the little knife. I have used a lot of fancy bottle openers, this gets it done the best.

Plus it was a free promo from a company

Nothing causes me to spew hyphenated words like these ungodly things.

I stopped buying Terrapin special releases because of their stupid wax bottles. Almost lost a finger once, and the last few times, I've just plunged a corkscrew into the top and pour from there.

I've never done it but a few were frustrating enough to think about a blowtorch.

as i mentioned once before, kitchen sheers have worked well for me. i put red arrows on the image to illustrate the tool/ part of the scissors i plant into the wax, clasp & simply twist directly underneath the cap-line. it will dig out a clear path in the wax. while still clasping tight after circling around once, you can use the same device to raise & remove the cap itself too.

Was it the one from Tonya? If you haven't yet opened the Port one from me, now you'll know what to expect...

@Hotmetal1 is the Whaleslayer producer, doesn't seem to be active on here much anymore, but I agree that his stuff is fantastic. Hope he doesn't mind me bypassing the waitlist and asking a local blacksmith to make a similar design, if I ever decide I need another bottle opener. For the time being, my (much less modified) railroad spike seems to fit the bill. I sharpened the spike end slightly to dig into the wax and it seems to get the job done without slicing open my finger yet.

Yup, the Huckleberry Grand Cru. Fantastic beer. Gonna have to double check on the Port one.

I use this, push the opener through the wax and open as normal. Works well. I used to use the cutter attachment to cut the wax, but found it's really not necessary.

Exactly - most metal openers can be pressed through the wax and the cap can be removed fairly easily and safely. Plastic can be a bit tougher than real wax, but it still works.
