After looking at the vine information on the better bottle site, my final volume maybe closer to 4 gallons.

Going with the concept of acid etching the pot. In theory, once you have the first couple of gallons marked, the distance between lines for each gallon would be constant correct?

You would end up with a cumulative error equal to ten times the error in your original measurement, in the case of a ten gallon kettle. IOW, if your measurement was off by 4 ounces, your ten gallon mark would be 40 ounces over or under. If you measure each gallon independently, there is a tendency for the errors to cancel each other out - some are a bit over, some are a bit under.

That said, I'd be inclined to do as you suggested. It's close enough in the context of homebrewing.

I brewed again today. I went back to my old burner and moved it back in the garage, used the same 15 gallon pot, and increased my calculated evaporation to 20%. I am happy to say that my final volume was a calculated 5.5 gallons and had about 1/2 gallon of hot break left in the pot.

    Thanks everyone on the guidance.
