now that I read enough of the thread to understand what "ticking" meant (had no idea), I solve my own tendencies to obsess/collect/acquire things by always making sure to pick out a 4/6-pack of a favorite or go-to, and then pick a few new ones to go with it. My constant stock of beers always has a bunch of stuff I've never had, and then my trustworthy stuff.

That's a pretty good strategy. Thanks! I think I'll be pursuing that going forward.

When untappd came out I still stuck to my favorites. But after a year or so I found myself doing "build a sux pack" with every trip to the store. And this past year I've been picking up a lot more special releases I'd never paid much attention too. It's definitely given me a more rounded experience of a few styles and opened my palate up to BA beers. I'll probably continue to tick away for another 1,000 +/- before returning to more of my favorites on the regular and cutting back on the ticking.

You must be having a hard time keeping up with all the cans these days. Every time I go to the store it looks like there is something new in a can. (Not that I'm complaining as it is my vessel of choice for everyday beers.) Glad to see them finally taking off in the craft world.

I kind of feel like a ticker. I have earned the nickname from one bar as "The Count". Its because I work second shift and always come in after dark looking for new beers to try (I'm up to 1243 at that bar alone). I have went to beer stores and left without a purchase because they had nothing new I wanted to try. Not to say I did not want to buy anything, I just want singles to try. Typing this out I have realized I may have a problem.

Haha it works even better if you get ones you know you will like rather than beer that sux.

    Yes, I know it's a typo, but couldn't resist.

So long as you keep your old stand-bys around, I don't think its a bad thing. I almost always have a case of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and/or Victory Prima Pils in my fridge. They are my late night beers after I am done trying whatever I felt like buying that week.
