I'd agree that they beers are a bit on the pricey side. I think it has a lot to do with the bottles they use and the cost of labor to manually bottle everything. I would really be okay with them using standard 22oz bombers or even better 12oz and getting a bottling line.

This and I just drain poured a Mad Meg yesterday. The majority of JK regular beers are not my glass of beer. Not a fan of Farmhouse anything. The only Farmhouse/Saison beer I like is Boulevard Tank 7.

I think it's the farmhouse yeast that just doesn't do anything for me in a stout. Certainly on paper it seemed like the sort of thing I would really enjoy. Could just be my mouth is broken.

So with that thinking, all the Russian River offerings should be cheap? All the Bruery offerings should be within a limited and affordable price point? 512's whiskey barrel aged double pecan porter should be cheap? That makes absolutely no sense. A brewery is going to price a beer based on the price of the ingredients and the cost of the production. Using wild or farmhouse yeast may take longer to fully attenuate or to develop the flavor the brewer wants, thereby taking up more space/time and thus the price must go up to compensate. Same thing with barrel aging.

Local beer may be good or bad. Local beer may be cheap or expensive. But local beer is definitively local. If you don't like the price, don't buy it. Support other local breweries that fit within your budget and taste.

It is true that Jester King produces beer that may be more expensive than other local offerings. But I'm very happy and excited to at least try those products, despite the expense. I'm proud to be a Texan and I'm very excited that a local brewery is pushing the envelope in regards to production (using truly 'wild' hill country yeast) and flavor (kopi luwak coffee). What other brewery is producing a truly sour beer? What other brewery is producing a sessionable farmhouse table beer?

Keep drinking your pale ales. More Jester King for the rest of us.

But then how would anyone brag about being so hardcore they drain poured a style they knew they didn't like anyhow?

Then I guess everything is overpriced. Paid $12.99 a bottle for South Austin Brewing; paid $13-15 a bottle for (512); $10-12 a bottle for JK seems to be right in line with everything else. If you want cheaper, stick to Rahr and St. Arnold.

May I also make a point that you are getting quantity with JK as well. What other Texas brewery's offers regular offerings as 750ml?

You realize that a 750ml bottle is only 25.36 ounces, right?

I liked the regular Black Metal and Wichmaker way more than the farmhouse versions. Anyone know if they are they ever going to make a beer that does not use wild yeasts again? I think I might be over the sours for awhile as well.

I don't think they're going to. I think the term they used was that they wanted to be a "farmhouse" brewery. They've also been selling pretty well so far and they've been able to sell out of state as well.

That's to bad because the original BM was awesome.

edit...I know they said they want to be a "farmhouse" brewery but are they just currently riding the farmhouse/saison/sour wave? And once that wave washes out, will they change to the next fad?

Drainpouring anything other than an infected beer baffles me. Are your palates THAT sensitive? Boggles the mind.

And to say "riding the fad"? What would you like? Lagers, ipas, and stouts?

Wonder bread...because sourbread is too trendy.

If I don't like it I'll drain it. And I say that because they switched over on the BM from English to Farmhouse yeast or it could be coincidence.

I liked the farmhouse black metal better, I like the farmhouse yeastiness personally, can't wait for the sour black metal, maybe their style isn't for everyone but it works for me

They did that, per Jeff, because thats what they intended from the beginning for all their beers. Its been beaten to death, by me in fact in other posts, and been replied to several times by jeff and ron.
