I should have mentioned I'm doing it at home. I have a bartender hired, but I'm supplying the juice. Not planning any kegs, canned beer is easier to deal with when there's leftovers.

I'd get a sixtel of something local that is reasonably priced. I was gonna say Bells but they're pretty overpriced (IMO) in this neck of the woods. Maybe they give home-state discounts?

After reading over the responses, I think Mothergoose03 has a good point (and a few others seem to agree) two hearted is pretty popular and widely available. Plus I'll drink leftovers. I can always offer beer from my private stash if I happen to see someone pining for a dark beer. I just don't want to open it up to everyone and have all my rare beers get drank (or opened and poured out when they don't like it)

Two hearted is around 18 bucks per 12 pack at meijers i believe. I could always do all day ipa, that's a bit cheaper. Either would probably please some people.

Not being snarky, but you know the guests, we don't.

I don't know all the people on her side, but I get your point. Just fun getting everyones ideas. This is the only enjoyable part of planning such an event haha.

If YOU or your wife like them, then yes.

    If you don't, then no.

Open bar should please everyone, if it doesn't then they are just being picky.

This is true. Most people won't turn down free booze of any kind. I'm such a lush it's hard to not overdo it on the bar part of things. The food won't be as fancy as the bar is for sure. All the people saying "just enjoy the day, drinks aren't that important" are 100% correct. I'm just a people pleaser to an unhealthy degree at times.

as an unmarried person who has attended quite a few weddings, all of them have been open bars.

I'm an IPA guy through and through but I don't drink beer at weddings. At weddings I am 90% of the time gin/tonic and the other 10% is bourbon on the rocks

I had a keg of Hill Farmstead Edward and Susan at my wedding. It's your wedding, they're the guests, there are plenty of other drink options. I say drink what you want.

Oh weddings (as a guest). Of all the ones I have been to, only two served anything besides BMC. I even went to one a year or two ago where the best selection was 7oz Coronas (yes it was a formal event, inside, not on a beach).
I have hope, we were just invited to our 1st "destination" wedding, and this is for a sibling of the two other weddings that had good beer. I have already heard that the the catering will be handled by 5+ food trucks (a good sign)! Oh by the way, its in Hawaii.

    I would keep it light.

    Troegs Sunshine Pils
Great Lakes Dortmunder Union or Elliot Ness
Perhaps a Helles from Paulaner or another Munich brewery

But mostly you should get something that you like and can take away with you if there is any left.

Damn, I'm jealous. Can I skip mine and just go to that one? (My fiancée would say the same)

I’d go with some Sierra Nevada pale ale, hazy little thing, maybe some hop bullet. Seeing your in Michigan anything from Bells or Founders would do the trick.

Thanks a lot! (Also to others congradulating me) it's an exciting and sometimes nerve wracking process. But it'll be a lovely day when all this planning is through.

Haha, I can just see someone whale hunting to stock a wedding bar. Then the guests show up and say "what the hell is this? Eww, it's too strong. I'm dumping it out."

Aren't Two Hearted and Oberon the obvious choices?
