Hey guys. Heading down to your area this weekend on a whim to eat and visit some breweries. Wicked Weed and Green Man are on the list, however any hidden gems would be appreciated. As for BBQ, im getting conflicting reports of 12 Bones or Luelahs. What do you think?

Best beer stores in the area? Are Wicked Weed bottles/growler fills available at the brewery?

    Thanks for an suggestions!

Burial - WW Funkatorium - Pisgah (about 15min out of town, but worth it)
    Appalachian Vinter for bottles
Yes - bottles and growlers at WW, but they only fill their own

12 Bones Asheville location is only open Mon-Fri 11am-4pm, but there is another location a bit out of town open on the weekends. Never been to that location so I can`t vouch for it, but we love some 12 Bones after a long night around town.

Early Girl Eatery or Sunny Point Cafe for breakfast/brunch
Mojo Kitchen & Lounge for great late night bar food

Ive had both luelas and 12 bones and i would go with 12 bones. Their side dishes are insane!! I dream about the smoked potato salad frequently. Appalachian Vintner is by far the best bottle shop around. They always have a well thought out tap list and they are good people!!

12 Bones if you get there Friday but get the blueberry chipolte ribs instead of pork BBQ. Mmmmmmm.

Hidden gem. Well Burial is sort of hidden and a gem (but they certainly aren't unknown). It is always on my must stop list.

Avoid Green Man's. Crappy atmosphere and mediocre beers.

I don't mind Green Man, they have a few good brews... Plus they have the food truck outside so its not far to walk over from Burial for the food. But, yea Burial is right around the corner, say 50 yards. Look for the kegs out front, you won't see a sign. hardly.

Green Man makes great beers, most of them are just pretty straightforward styles so they're not exciting enough for some people. They always have one or two things on in the taproom that are a little different and are not bottled though.

That being said, I have experienced crappy service there on at least 3 different occasions. I think they have more of a regular customer base than most of the breweries in town, so I guess the bartenders don't really give a damn whether you come back or not.

Just spent 2.5 days in Asheville. Only hit the places within walking distance from Four Points Sheraton...in my order of favs:

    1) Wicked Weed
    2) WW Funkatorium
    3) Green Man
    4) One World - my first time there...really cool place with solid beers
    5) Burial
    6) HI-wire
    7) Asheville Pizza (but only go if you want to eat too)
    8) Wedge - not worth the walk. Decent beers but nothing special. Kinda cool location but not worth the walk from dowtown. If I could go back in time, I'd skip it and hit WW and Funk again.
    9) Twin Leaf - second time I've hit this place and it just isnt any good. Beer tastes watery. May try 1 more time and then write them off completely

Then as for bars - only hit Thirsty Monk this trip. Upstairs and down. Really enjoyed Quest Brewing Kaldi Coffee stout. Nice place, the bacon is delicious too!

Met friends from LA and Ohio there so we all brought our own beers to drink at the hotel as well...KBBS, King Henry, New Glarus Serendipity, Belgian Red, rum barrel aged Black Tuesday, Mexican Cake, Cantillon Fou Fonne, Saint Lam, Iris, FOunders 2009 & 2010 Nemesis...so we had plenty of great beer.

Such a great time in a great town.

Also totally disagree. I was recently in Asheville and it was my second favorite brewery we visited (and we visited quite a few breweries). The BA Imperial Porter was my favorite beer of the whole Asheville trip. I also really appreciated the super chill atmosphere and quite outdoor area (we did go on a week night).

btw, Biscuit Head, my god. Talk about a good brunch place to shake off the cobwebs.

Agree with all of this, but I think most people don't walk all the way from downtown when they go to the River Arts District, ha. Good way to burn off some beer calories though.

First off, how did I not know that there was a rum barrel aged Black Tuesday?

Also, and more on topic, on my recent trip I also stayed at Four Points Sheraton. LAB is probably the closest brewpub/brewery to that hotel, but don't feel like you missed out as it was my least favorite place we went (food was good but beer was kind of blah). I would agree that WW, Green Man, and One World were probably my favorite places in that order. Apparently we have similar tastes. I wrote up mini reviews of each place in a different thread, that I'll try to go find and will post back here.

Below is my original post. Search "Asheville Dilemma" for a good thread with lots of info

"My girlfriend and I had a great time. So much so that we are already looking at future dates to potentially return. We stayed at the 4 Points Sheraton, a little further out then some places but prices were insane for some reason (Aloft was around $500/night, see above). Sheraton was fine, hotel itself wasnt that great, but we loved the location. We walked to everything we did, which was a nice change of pace for us. The furthest brewery we walked to was Burial, and although it was over a mile, there were plenty of other places to stop at on the way back to the hotel.

We hit up several breweries. Wicked Weed, Burial, Greenman, One World, Asheville Brewing Company and LAB.

Wicked Weed: absolutely ridiculous place. Loved everything about it. Tap list was out of the world, at least 20 different original beers on tap, probably more. I tried around ten, thanks to the flights as well as the options for smaller pours (10oz, maybe even 8oz I dont remember). The food was fantastic too, honestly the best cheese plate Ive ever had. And the price was ridiculous. Literally laughed when we got our bill which included a full beer pour, a flight, a glass of wine (for the lady friend) and both our meals for around $55, incredible deal. Anyways, back to the important thing, the beers. They were great. The sours were the only thing about the place that didnt exceed expectations. I was a bit disappointed in the Black Angel, although it was good. I thought their hoppy beers were excellent, Tyrant double red was awesome, and my favorite beer from them was surprisingly Reticent their flagship farmhouse ale. Overall an amazing place that I cant wait to go back to.

Green Man: my second favorite place. Their Imperial Porter (bourbon barrel aged) was my favorite beer of the entire week in Asheville. My girlfriend doesnt drink beer (tragic I know), but she always samples the beers I get. Well she liked this one so much that she actually wanted her own pour. This may seem minor, but we've been dating over 3 years and this was the first time shes ever ordered a beer for herself. Game changer, haha. Cool atmosphere here too, very chill outdoor area. My kinda place. Only downside is they dont serve food, although there was a food truck there.

One World: tiny place, in a basement which is literally just a basement. Pretty cool though. Seems like these guys are about as early a start up as it gets. I was shocked at how small the batches were (they were fermenting in rooms you can see into). Only had one beer there, the coconut porter, which was very good. I could see this being a fun low key place to hang out.

Burial: was packed and we were rushed. Only had one beer there, a raspberry IS. Wasnt a huge fan of it, not bad but it was following up some killer Green Man beers so it was a bit of a let down. Seemed to be more of a hipster scene too, which isnt exactly my scene. Place was fine, but its not a must re-visit for me.

Asheville Brewing Company: kind of a generic atmosphere compared to all the cool places with character in the city, beer selection was pretty straight forward, I only had one beer there which was an IPA and it was real good. Pizza was awesome.

LAB: By far my least favorite place. I like the location and the outdoor/open air part is ideal for people watching the characters of Asheville. The beer selection was quite small, and neither of the beers I had was anything better than average (I had a saison and an IPA). Food was good though.

In terms of Brewery Tours, we passed on that. I figured with the knowledge I had of the breweries (mostly from this thread and other BA searches), I could put together my own tour that focused more on my specific wants. It worked out well. I will say that we did do a food tour, which was awesome and a great deal. $57 a person, stopped at 7 places including some great restuarants. Each place had a small food serving (think, small appetizer), and 6 of the 7 had an alcoholic beverage paired with the food. We are not big eaters but it was plenty of food to count as dinner for my girlfriend and I, so if you are in town I would highly recommend that as well (Eating Asheville Walking Food Tour).

Sorry for the long post. Figured Id share my experiences as they might be helpful to others.

Cant wait to go back, to those who live in Asheville, ya'll have a great city. We're thinking about going back over NYE, thats how much we liked it."
