Having a weighted rank sorting column for all the beers produced by each brewery would be a useful tool.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/top-rated-beers-explained.587593/

Maybe it is just me: When visiting a brewery, I like to get a representative selection of available beers. I chose by style, then by what the community feels is “best of” whatever is currently available.

It seems that such a column would be fairly easy to add, as the weighted ranking is already being calculated. Not to show the weighted ranking score, rather just to list a specific brewery’s beers according to the WR, as is already being done for the “Top Rated” lists.

@Todd, do you think this may be doable? Everyone else, do you think this would be a worthwhile tool?

    Thanks for your consideration.

    Sort of doable, but...
    • WR is only being fully calculated on the beer page, but we could sort by the beer's rank; a number assigned on a daily basis; displayed under Score in the Beer Geek Stats
    • Most beers aren't ranked, because they don't meet the criteria, so this column would be empty for most beers
    • Not stoked about adding another column to an already cramped table/list
    I voted no.

I voted against this one, not because I don’t think Weighted Rank is valuable to know but rather because there is already too much information crammed into this table.

I voted no, because I would likely never use it.

Not brewery specific, but in terms of style rankings/ratings I could imagine a weighted rank-type feature useful to help mitigate style-bias.

    Same here.

If I understand the info in the link and what Todd posted, so many beers in a small brewery's list wouldn't receive a WR because they don't qualify for a rating (I assume this means the minimum of 10 ratings, but maybe it looks at when the beer was listed vs. how long ago it was the last rated).

Because of this limitation, @SLeffler27 , I'm not sure you'd get the good quality list that you're wanting to see with your proposal.

I voted no so I can get brownie points with @Todd Just kidding.
I voted no like others there is already a lot of information available and this would be a bit of data overload.

    Good point.

And the point about crowding too.

    thanks.

For those of us that are data geeks, I might agree; but if @Todd is as competent as I think he is in this regard, he likely has it normalized quite well and as such it should be no problem adding a single column in the proper place.

I voted yes as I’m a data engineer and more data is better than less.

I am likely in the minority here. Especially since I can’t actually see the data, just the results.

    Cheers!

Have done lots with data over the years but at some point continuing to add columns to an already crowded table becomes unwieldy… Spent quite a bit of time in my career working with the UX folks to try and balance all the data and making it consumable.

Hence my comment about Todd having a clue. I’m all about data normalization and a well thought out database is a beautiful thing.
That said, even very wide tables are made manageable by a few views.

With most beers from breweries only getting 1-3 reviews, the results wouldn’t provide much value-add unfortunately.

The above point, made two different ways, is the more significant argument against adding a WR column. A WR column would relegate the number of ratings column as unnecessary (as that information is displayed on the individual beer pages), thus freeing space for WR which seems to be more valuable information.

As for the number of null values, due to insufficient rating data, the same can be said for number of reviews. If a minimum of ten reviews is a prerequisite for a WR, then which data set provides more information? IMO, ten is a good min. requirement AND the WR is still more valuable in the table because is provides more compact information regarding the data.

Rank (overall) could be useful, however the WR is a better understood value of the collective perception of the specific beer.

WR is also only two digits, vs. potentially five digits of the overall ranking or similarly the total Ratings. Thus a WR column, in place of Ratings column, would actually free-up space on the table.
