Yup, they’re here! We received word of this in the new Helles thread. It’s official, the Hefeweizen and Helles have dropped, in MA at least. A member in the New England forum said there’s best by dates on the cans, anyone know how this translates to the canning date?
Now I just have to get my local store to order them. He never succeeded in the paulaner pils, said it was unavailable. We’ll see with these... I’d guess a year @AlcahueteJ but I’m sure someone may know with certainty.
As I clicked this thread I was saying "Please be 16 oz, please be 16 oz. etc." I will purchase the helles the second I see it.
Funny but I do trust the guy, I talk to him a lot and he orders almost anything I ask, its pretty nice. He said it's something about Paulaner, lazy response yes but I think he was truthful. Another store said the same thing, either that or I'm just a sucker.
Sounds like he's trusting the word of his distro and nothing else. See if you can find out who the distro is and contact them... but expect a similar response. Maybe contact Paulaner USA to make them aware. All that said, I've looked for the Paulaner at a few spots around here -- when I remember to check, and haven't seen it, so who knows? But Paulaner beers have been readily available at many spots in my area for a while now.
Our local store here doesn’t carry Weihenstephaner anymore, they just keep adding unknown Raleigh brewery beers. I doubt they move well, because bars aren’t open people are sampling and tasting on site. I’m not paying $12 from a brewery I’ve never heard of before. In this wired worn I’m going back to known staples, their “German “ beer section compromises Becks, St Pauli Girl, with a well known Heineken or Urquell is only a step away. It’s really the only craft beer store here in town at Lowe’s Foods, even their Beer Den taps are stale, mainly all Red Oak, need a bit of variety.
The canned Paulaner & Kostritzer are both 1 year from canning to BB, Weihenstephaner is probably the same.
The good news about these new canned products from Weihenstephaner is that over the next month(s) these will be fresh products. Cheers to fresh German beer (which is a rarity in my area)!
Awesome! Will pick up a 4-pack of each of I see them. I haven't been able to find the Paulaner Pils near me either. And a search on Paulaner's Beer Finder shows one store in a 100 mile radius that carries it. Kind of odd because we got the Munchner Lager and Hefeweizen cans pretty quickly.
It seems the Best Before date is 11.19.21 on those cans. I imagine it's a year as well. A Dec 19 date does not seem feasible to me. Looking forward to your confirmation, however.
Permit me to rant once again: Listing a best by duration of one year (especially for beers styles like Hefeweizen and Helles) is a load of crap! Non-cheers to this!
I will take one of each, please. Actually I still have not had the hefe as I have not found it both refrigerated and fresh. I know I will love it fresh and safely in a can.
You're probably right, I highly doubt it was December. My fear is that it's OVER a year out. Jever has a 15 month best by date for example. It's likely a year, but I'd like confirmation for future purchases (I assume this batch will be fresh).
I agree, Jever here on the shelf is always past their very generous freshness window. Sorry it’s 16 months old no thanks. I’d guess between by boat and customs 4 months might be as good as it ever gets. It’s been here on Urquell rarely though, 6 months is more likely, and I don’t like the taste, I could pick it out blind because it seems it always tastes “funny”. I can get 10 day old local Pils that blow it away so I really have stopped looking.
Dale, FWIW that is the freshest I have ever seen Jever (i.e., 4 months old). That has only occurred once to the best of my recollection. I have not seen a Jever less than 6 months old in a couple of years. If I do I will buy a six-pack. I am kinda in that same situation. My last Pilsner purchase was a six-pack of Sterling Pig Shoats Pilsner which was less than two weeks from canning. That beer is excellent and I paid less than $8.50 for it. A classic win-win situation. Cheers!
Absolutely, if I’m a retailer I start looking at turns like any shelf item. Hey if enough are buying old Urquell it’ll be on the shelf for them, we won’t but but then again to 99% of the world a beers a beer. They don’t go check dates and if you sell them a sucky enough beer they won’t buy it anymore, and they won’t even know why the beer sucks.
A 3 month old Jever is a gift from the beer Gods; they don't come around all too often and you would be remiss if you passed on it.
I’ve never seen one under 15 months old which is their Best Buy date. Maybe they should bump that to 18 to stay within date.
Nah. I would only buy at 5 months if I was in a particularly whimsical mood; anything over that and I'm not even considering it. But under 3 months means drop everything else and get a case.
And unfortunately the "Gods" have not smiled upon me this freshly. As I posted above I once was able to purchase a four month old six-pack. In the past I used to utilize 6 months as my cut-off but I have not even seen a Jever this fresh in the past two years. Thank goodness for very high quality, fresh and economically priced locally produced German Pilsners (and I have many brands to pick from). Cheers!
I've never seen nevermind had Jever. No offers please to anyone out there... Sadly, my mainstay of German Pilsners has not been on the shelf for a couple of weeks now. Edit: That would be the Veltins.
If you ever see it in your travels and the "Gods" smile on you with the product being fresh I would encourage you to buy some. Some of the features I appreciate about this beer: It is bone dry and upon each sip you just want another. If the beer is fresh upon the initial pour I pick up some sulfur dioxide (a struck match smell) which I really, really like. It diminishes fairly quickly (by the third or fourth sip) but I appreciate it when it is there. It has a nice bitterness level (maybe something like 35 IBUs) which I appreciate It has... I just wish I could find this beer fresh in my area. Cheers!
I messaged weihenstephaner USA last week about availability in my area and they told me early February. This gives me hope maybe sooner.
The first time I noticed Jever I bought 2 half liter cans (pretty sure that was the size) not knowing that the best buy date was 15 months after canning.
FWIW -- I saw that Paulaner.com has a beer finder. The Pils is actually at a retailer not far from me, but I'm surprised it's not closer.
Well, the good news is that they now list both the packaged on date and the best by date. Not that this is all that helpful if the beer is > 6 months from bottling. Cheers!
I picked up a few four packs last night, along with a bunch of other stuff, but I believe they were about $12 per pack.
