Has anyone in your area experienced a shortage of Weihenstephaner Hefeweissen? I can't find this beer bottles or cans in my area for some strange reason. If is is available, its very old stock. Anyone able to offer an explanation as to why this might be happening to a beer that is usually readily available?

I’ve noticed that prices of all Weihenstephaner products went up in my area this past week.

Cans are available in the MPLS-St.Paul Metro. Not all over the place but you can find them.

Yes, there is a massive can and glass shortage going on right now. Even Icehouse is having issues for example. A sub Reddit group I’m apart of is having a hard time getting glass bottles for our group barrel pick (Woodford Reserve Double Oaked). I could only imagine what breweries are going through.

The brewery will most likely adapt and get a new apparatus.

*Unless the brewery itself is having issues aside from aluminum or glass shortages.

I started noticing all Weihenstephaner labels dwindling from shelves around my area of Northeastern Illinois about a year ago.

Not sure if it's distro, importer, or brewery trouble.

A month ago I purchased a six-pack of Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier in bottles; they were bottled on Feb. 15, 2021.

I have not seen canned versions in my area but I did see them at my 'local' Total Wine & More - Claymont, Delaware. Those beers were canned on Jan. 13, 2021.

I conducted a side-by-side tasting of these beers and discussed this in the Side-by-Side thread:

I wonder if the date played more of a role vs the glass / aluminum or vice versa.

side note: I think I’m going to have a beer now :beers:

Interesting. I am fairly new to the brand (1 year) and regularly pick up the Hefe and Helles in cans at Total Wine and the odd refrigerated 500ml bottle of Vitus at the grocery. I'm looking forward to the Festbier.

All I see now are cans of the Hefeweiss and 500ml bottles of Vitus and they are shrinking quickly from the shelf.

    Edit: Oh, and Korbinian.

Odd, just yesterday I was beer shopping for a small party that was BYOB. I wanted some old reliables so I was looking for Kristallweissbier. The whole Weihenstephaner section was cleared out. I didn’t think much of it intil I read this thread :slight_frown:

Back in October/November I remember a local store, who stocks a lot of imports, saying the shipping form overseas god all messed up like everything else last year.

I’m not sure if it’s just what the distributor told him or what. This is when I was asking about paulaner pilsner, which eventually came 6 months later. He said he also had trouble getting some of his usually easy to acquire import Oktoberfest beers. I guess with all the shortages we’ve seen elsewhere it would make sense.

I personally have had no problem finding weihenstephan though, so who really knows. Just throwing info I was told that may answer the question.

@deanzaZZR their festbier was one of my favorite beers from last year. It’s a great beer.

I'm guessing that the shelf space formerly occupied by the Weihenstephaner Hefe is now being taken up by the latest and greatest IPA and/or seltzer.

IPA maybe, but any seltzers in stores around me have a separate section from the beer.

Easier to reconfigure when the fad fades.

We have just seen the beginning of it. Remember the toilet paper situation? Yeah, something similar is happening with all sorts of other things now.

I am working in purchasing for a US company that builds custom automation equipment. Our headquarter is in Germany. We have to deal with international imports quite a bit.
Ports all over the coasts are heavily congested because there is a shortage of staff unloading the vessels. Trucking for inland transport is the same deal. On top of that, shortage of materials (glass, aluminum e.t.c.), like mentioned before.
My best guess, it's combination of both of these factors. We have seen crazy lead times for material that was usually stocked by manufacturers or distribution. The warehouses are empty and the supply chain is broken.

@Manta200 might be on to something.

Bleached white #4 coffee filters and single boxes of tissues have been in very short supply for a month or more now. Yea, I know, but it is another unexplained phenomenon or it may just be local.

I can't find any with a bottling date of 2021 in Pittsburgh. Possible supply chain issues importing from Germany.
