Never seen this before on a batch of beer... brewed a simple saison on Friday, July 3.

9.5 lbs Belgian pils, 1.5 lbs German wheat, mashed at 149 for 90 min, 90 min boil, lots of Czech Saaz, fermented with Wyeast 3711. Had a nice steady ferment for the first few days, and maintained a temp of around 70F in my basement. Noticed these little things sitting on top of the krausen for the first few days, and now that the krausen has pretty much dropped, they are still just sitting on the surface.

I don't think it's an infection, because the samples smell/taste like your average spicy/citrusy saison. Just seeing if anyone has seen floaties like this before? I'm thinking it's just remnants from the yeast/krausen, but figured I'd ask you guys.

    TIA!

Looks like hop gunk to me. I get similar floaties when I use 4+ oz of pellet hops

I stopped paying attention to what the fermenting beer looks like. At best it looks a little weird and at worst it looks like something that needs to be dumped when in fact it still maintains/exudes magicalness. Established sound sanitation, brewing, and fermentation procedures combined with tasting and smelling along the way go way further than sight. I probably have not seen the last 20 beers I've brewed between kettle and the tubing going into the keg.

Thanks guys. Not really worried about it, just curious as to what it might be. @CurtFromHershey you made a good point, there was almost 5 oz of Czech saaz that went into this one, so it could easily be hop gunk.

Do a image search using "yeast boats". That's what it looks like.

I have the same thing but I split the batch of Rye IPA and pitched 3711 that looks like your picture and 1056 that looks ? "normal".

I brewed a batch of a saison once and the krausen never fell. It had funny blobs in it that looked very similar to your picture. I just siphoned out the beer from underneath it and it came out wonderful.
