In all fairness I did mean it as sarcastic at first. But the more I think about it a lot of APA's now could have easily been IPA's 5 or 10 years ago.

Two Hearted immediately comes to mind.

I'm throwing in with those who question some of the selections vs. what the OP is looking for. Racer 5 and Two Hearted are definitely delicious IPAs but I wouldn't call them "well balanced" as I think both lean heavily toward the hops.

Great Lakes Commodore Perry is IMAHO the most well-balanced American-made IPA out there, but unfortunately, not distributed where the OP lives. I would suggest looking at this list for a "well balanced IPA"

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned just digging in. There's a whole world of IPA's and APA and Black IPA's and Belgian IPA's that one should just drinking them ALL to get familiar!

But my vote goes to Two Hearted

Plenty of balance available in America. The idea that American brewers as a whole are over the top and lack an appreciate for balance and subtlety is ridiculously overplayed. Balance does not often receive the praise or get the beer geeks clamoring but it does exist.

Okay, nobody seems to be asking this question: Do you want a representation of an American IPA, or an English IPA? If you want an American IPA, I'd go with Anchor Liberty Ale (which you already tried) or something from Dogfish Head. If you want an English IPA, go for Samuel Smith's India Ale or Young's London Ale.

You don’t need to buy beers made in Britain to obtain a balanced (balance between hops and malts) IPAs. The three beers I mentioned in my previous post are all balanced: Victory Hop Devil, Southampton IPA, and Lefthand 400 lb. Monkey. There are other US made IPAs that are balanced beyond this list of three.

    Cheers!

nthing Sweetwater IPA. That's such an accessible IPA and should be all around you. And also nthing Two Hearted. I used to hate IPAs, yet I liked that one. The bitterness in many other IPAs turned me right off and annoyed me, but I still liked that one even before I turned to to the dark side.

Give Hopdevil a try. I think it's got a bigger malt backbone than many other IPAs, and without over the top bitterness.

Just got back from Colorado with a trunkload of beers. I would have to throw Odell's IPA into the mix. Excellent beer.

Sierra Nevada Torpedo. Green Flash West Coast IPA....Schlafly AIPA. I've recently discovered Great Lakes Commodore Perry IPA which I really like too. Stone IPA is great too. Be forewarned - once you develop your palate for the IPA/AIPAs you will never go back!!

The first two when I think of balance are Deschutes Inversion IPA and Anderson Valley Hop Ottin' IPA.

IPA's should be 'balanced', it's about the hops. If you want a balanced beer between malt/hops, try an amber.

Try Brooklyn East India Pale Ale. It's Brewed in as an English IPA not an American IPA. It is sold in GA.

Terrapin Hopzilla is more balanced than anything. So is Two-Hearted and Great Lakes Commodore Perry.
