Well-made American Quads

Three Taverns Quasimodo. Since they have a Belgian brewer, you'd expect it to be good. It's great. Best American Quad I've ever had.

 

Not to my palate! I loved it.

 

I really like The Reverend from Avery brewing.

 

Sly Fox Ichor is a good one too!

Surprised I'm the first to mention it but i really enjoyed Judgment Day by Lost Abbey

Also The Widow by Societe is considered a BSDA... really good!

Three Philosophers sticks out most to me.

I do find Allagash to be one of the better American breweries with consistently enjoyable "Belgian-Style" beer. Their basic quad is very nice, and they make a ton of fascinating dark beers like Odyssey (blended dark wheat wine) and Midnight Brett (dark wild ale). Also, very much liked Folklore from Stillwater Artisinal, wish they would put out some more dark Belgians.

 

I'm casting another vote for The Sixth Glass by Boulevard.

 

Love Pretty Things Baby Tree

 

Gonna have to go with Blvd. BBQ which is just outstanding. The Reverend is good in a pinch. Three Philosophers is pretty tasty, albeit a bit boozy, which I have absolutely no problem with honestly. Smuttynose Gravitation deserves an honorable mention.

 

I thought Baby Tree was muted compared to the likes of Three Philosophers and Allagash Four, which are my two American favorites. However, those beers seem to deviate somewhat from the flavors that I get from the Belgian Quads that I've had. I like the differences. Either way, I can see myself lining up quite a few Quads next fall/winter. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite styles, along with the Dubbel. I've got my first 6th Glass chilling in the fridge as I type.

 

Schlafly Quadrupel, SN Ovila and Blvd Sixth Glass get my vote.

My 2 favorites have only been mentioned once each:

Cigar City Forgotten Island is absolutely fantastic (though I understand the rum barrel aging "disqualifies" it for some style sticklers)
Three Taverns Quasimodo is new to the scene and freakin delicious. Closest to a Belgian that I've tried.

Honorable mention to Wild Heaven Eschaton. The aging on pinot noir oak spirals gives it a flavorful spin that I quite enjoy.

 

Adelbert's Flying Monk is great.

 

I really liked that one Apis IV also. Have a bottle for a special occasion.

 

Blvd Sixth Glass and BBQ

Honarable mention 3 Philo.

 

3 Philosophers, Ovila (with or without plums, but I enjoyed the plums more), and The Reverend, probably in that order. I've yet to have 6th Glass (since they don't distro here), Allagash 4 (again, no distro), Weyerbacher's (just haven't gotten it), and would like to try Sam Adams Tetravis (I'm a sucker for SA).

 

I'd better grab a Quasimodo. Now.

 

They (Firestone) specifically refer to it as a "Belgian Quad" by recipe. So what are you, or they, missing?

Brau Brothers Bourbon Barrel Quad, best American Made one I've had yet, too bad it was a small release 2 years ago. I have one bottle left and am debating drinking it or trading it (likely drinking it).

 

Not too surprised, mind you. Theophan may not have been the best RIS I've had, but it was a solid first try for Three Taverns. They really are a credit to the ATL beer community.

 

Here's one. Avery 5 Monks (bourbon barrel-aged Belgian-style Quintupel ale). This sounds awesome. 19% No. 22 in their Barrel Aged Series. Should be out next month. Only 732 cases made. You can look up the label. "...MUCH bigger and bolder than a quad".

 

So... what about Not the Stoic? "Belgian Style Quad"

 

Wild Heaven Eschaton is one of my favorites. Aged in red wine barrels to boot.

Chalk up another for Sixth Glass.

Though anothe rone of my favorites, and one I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned yet, is Mystic's Day Of Doom. It's got a bit of spice that reminds me of Christmas cake, as opposed to just booze-soaked dark fruits. And they've just released a barrel-aged version, though I haven't get a chance to try it yet.

 

I buy Sixth Glass on a regular basis. I've had and enjoyed many of the ones mentioned on here. I'm definitely a sucker for quads. Great style for my tastes.

 

Sixth Glass is also pretty damn affordable compared to other. I forgot Schlafly too, it's another great, reasonably priced Quad.

Wild Heaven's Eschaton doesn't actually go into barrels, they use oak chips. Still good, but not as good as it could be.

 

I like the Schlaflys, especially with a little age on it...

 

I dig the Christmas cake/pudding of a good/great quad to be sure. Hell half the Belgian iterations don't pull this off well IMO...

 

Blvd bourbon barrel quad is fantastic.

 

Just don't drink the stout, Theophan the recluse. Only beer I have ever drain poured.

 

Two that I don't believe have been mentioned yet that I enjoyed were:

My buddy is in Atlanta right now and is going to Leggs Package tomorrow to see what he can find that he can't get in Alabama. Do they bottle Quasimodo?

 

I agree, Brau Bros BA Quad was very nice & the Templeton Rye barrels were a nice Midwest touch. I drank one & have 3 bottles aging now, I hope they hold up!!
