Hey everyone. Just wondering if anyone has ever tried a West Coast IPA clone. Im almost sure that they use simcoe, columbus, centennial and cascade . Im asking for ideas on the hop times and also the grain/malt bill and timing also.Im thinking simcoe @ 60, columbus @ 30, centennial @ 10 or 5 then cascade @0 and stand for 30 minutes . Dry hop with one oz. Of each. So whoever wants to give their two cents feel free. Big thanks for any help. Btw not brewing this right away just want to start planning . Cheers!

Green Flash? If so, there is one from Can You Brew It (CYBI) and also they are all posted on homebrewtalk.com from CYBI. Google it and you will find it. I've brewed it, and it is spot on.

Green Flash West Coast IPA is okay, but why limit yourself? Sure, the Bros rate it 100 but ask them if they've ever had an APA IPA.

Seriously, if you like this style, give some thought to APA IPA. Here's the recipe (and background):

and what this site's brewers think about it:

Hop bills are similar and both are very aggressive. I've had both of the above and there's no doubt which one I'm brewing again.

I only had Green Flash once, about two weeks after I kicked the keg of my APA IPA. I didn't realize there was similarity in the recipes. I found the Green Flash to be sweeter than I desired. Maybe that's because I had a bottle on the east coast and maybe hops faded leaving the beer seem unbalanced for an IPA? I think the APA IPA was lower gravity, too. Anyhow, my preferences was for my homebrewed APA IPA.

If I wasn't out of simcoe I'd brew the APA IPA again verbatim next (after Munich/citra smash, which should get done this friday or saturday). I might just re-brew it anyway using the exact same grain bill, but change the hops around, perhaps something using centennial (which I still have), belma (bittering), and maybe an equal mix of cascade/willamette. I was thinking...

    0.5 oz belma at 60
0.5 oz each cascade, centennial, willamette at 15
0.5 oz each cascade, centennial, willamette at 10
0.5 oz each cascade, centennial, willamette at 5
1oz each cascade, centennial, willamette at FO/steep for 20 minutes
1oz each cascade, centennial, willamette dry hop
Since I already programmed beersmith with this recipe as "version 2" I'll probably just go with it and see what happens. There's no doubt in my mind it will be good (it's not that much different from the original, except beersmith* IBUs are 55 this way and were 67 the other way).
*obviously the true IBUs would be a bit higher due to the three ounces at flameout/hopstand, but beersmith doesn't calculate that. IBUs do not an IPA make anyway, and this one will have so much flavor that I won't really care about or notice the change in IBUs
