I’ve had enough. It’s over. I’m drinking a Smog City 13th Anniversary IPA right now (straight out of LA), and it’s all new age, Cryo-esque, liquid plastic tasting. No dank, no pine, no resin, no sticky icky, just pure blah. I can’t review this shit. West Coast is dead. I’m moving back to British beer like it’s 2007:

In my neck of the woods it’s definitely more difficult than it used to be to find a good IPA. Some of that is freshness.

Unfortunately it seems like it's been this way for awhile where WCIPA is a catch-all for "has some semblance of noticeable hop bitterness." Certainly not the bitterness bombs of the past. It's a shame really because actually finding new WCIPAs brewed correctly to style is nigh impossible these days. I was glad to see Stone reintroduce Ruination this year which is likely the closest thing you'll find nationally distributed on shelves right now, but it's priced here at $16.00/6-pack which has me lately reaching for Atomic Torpedo and regular Torpedo (speaking of widely distributed classic WCIPAs...) instead.

Sometimes you just gotta return to the classics.

Old man buys hip new beer, old man is mad it isn't like the beers he's used to, old man declares the beer he's used to "dead".

I stand sierra nevada pale and a beer called sticky fingers from a local brewery. Both are wonderfully dank, piny, and resiny. Got a Mosaic ipa from Oregon I'm gonna drink later. It's awesome.

Don't buy beer that's advertised as being a style you don't like. It never works out

Meh. Saying the best beer ever holds doen all West coast IPA’s is lame. And Pliny actually isn’t dank, or resiny or whatever. It’s just perfectly balanced and bitter: This post is just click bait.

I’m done. I.AM.DONE. I love Kern. But here is another plastic-ish Cryo-esque sunscreen ipa. Nothing dank about it:

". . . punchy sweet and bright peach . . ." should have been a tipoff. My excuse, if I bought this, would be my fading eyesight and the dim lighting in the beer store.

I actually enjoy the new school West Coast IPAs, but I wouldn't go so far as to classify them as the same thing. I'm still rocking my Sierra Nevada, Pliny and Stone like it's 2010.

Here's another case study: Fletch IPA fromEver Grain Brewing, which calls this a "fresh and vibrant west coast IPA brewed with a gentle but sturdy malt body and 100% Southern Hemisphere hops."
My thoughts: Aroma of oranges and cardboard, but not bad. Sweet and malty with a sharp finish. The flavor is orange peel with just a dark woody finish and astringency in the aftertaste. Overall this is more like a NEIPA than a regular American IPA. Rather tiresome to drink.

Yeah, I miss when IPAs would treat my tongue like it owed money. I can’t really remember the last time I had a beer that properly scratched that abrasively dank itch, but it certainly wasn’t in the 2020s. And I too got tired of being burned every time I bought something labeled “West Coast”, but shit changes and who knows, it may even come back around (like, for real come back around). On that hypothetical day, I’ll be happy for you and kindly ask that you drink one for me :beers:

Get someone to send you some Green Head IPA from Newburyport Brewing.

That shit will destroy your palate for a month and also works well as paint remover.

Yeah man, I miss IPAs that reek of cat piss, shit weed and pine sap that'll obliterate my palate at """120 IBUs""" so I can't taste anything else for the rest of the night, and are so painfully one-dimensional I might as well drink Natty Ice.

Fucking bring that shit back, and 22oz bottles while you're at it.

I’m finding plenty of solid west coast style IPAs lately from reputable East coast brewers.
