I do agree that there should be a different term for "Pacific Northwest IPA's. They are totally different than "West Coast IPA's" And they are not (as a whole) nearly as good). Don't get me wrong, there are some great beers up there.. But many of the standard IPA's in the Pacific NW style are a step behind.... Opinion.. not fact.

Everyone is inclined to their own tastes. I haven't had enough of the Pac NW IPAs to fully judge the merits in that regard. But the PAC NW gets major props from me for one critical reason: they pretty much grow all the hops used in the WC IPA style.

    Respect.

I used to be a very big fan of Green Flash West Coast IPA, then it went a little too one note for me. The more citrusy, fruitier IPAs like Pliny, Hopslam, Hill Farmstead Double Galaxy, Heady Topper are more complex and interesting...just much harder to get!

Haha I think you may have misunderstood me, I wasn't saying that PNW IPA's need their own classification, I was saying that they are better than any IPA from anywhere else, period. I'm sure my opinion is extremely biased seeing as I live in Seattle, but I've had some east coast IPA's and some from the midwest and they are good, but I prefer the ones out here instead, to me it just seems like breweries in Washington and Oregon have nailed it. PTE is also awesome, and I know that Santa Rosa is in northern Cali.....but I still kind just consider it part of the PNW.

To the OP- nice that you have lunch mentioned. Highly underated. It gets miscategorized a lot as a double ipa when it really is just a kick ass ipa.

Both of these are fantastic. The normal non double IPA's from these two brewers are also note worthy. Breakside in Portland also has a rather tasty IPA.

Yeah trickster by black raven is one of my favorite IPA's and it seems to be on tap all around town, awesome! I've never heard of Breakside, I'll have to check them out.

If these guys bottled/canned hop venom I would send you some, but as of right now all their beers are only available on tap. I've got a growler of hop venom right now, it's by far my favorite DIPA.

I always chuckle at a post like this living in the east if I said new England ipas are different then east coast ipas it sounds dumb. Designating a specific beer style to a region dosnt work anymore. I can see as a style but how does a west coast ipa differ from a pnw ipa? Now if a brewery in say southern Oregon brew an ipa and one in northern ca brew and ipa what are they?

Uh, what? Russian River is most definitely not in the Pacific Northwest. And Pliny tastes nothing like any of the IPA's I had on my travels through Oregon. To be honest most IPA's I had in Portland and Eugene were disappointing and very similar to one another. That was until I had some Oakshire IPA's, those were fantastic.

So what are some unknown IPAs over there that don't taste like pine, and are more tropical, like Bad Boy, because Pliny is only decent and Alpine Bad Boy is 2 legit to quit and pisses on Pliny.

Dont just tell me "this ipa is good". tell me what hop varities it uses and its key profile.

No I know that RR isn't really PNW, it's just so hard for me to consider it straight up California because I feel like the culture in northern Cali is so much different than the rest of California (not trying to offend anyone, just my opinion) I feel like a lot of the people I meet from norcal are a lot like the people I meet from around here. Have you had anything from Boneyard? I've had pliny countless times and to my palate Hop Venom from Boneyard tastes similar/better than pliny, but that's just my opinion. One thing is for sure though, you and I can agree on Oakshire, have you been to the brewery? Watershed is one of my favorite IPA's and all the people I've met at Oakshire are genuinely nice people, it's one of my favorite PNW breweries, great beer and even better people running the place.
