I wasn't there and I've never had Mexican Cake (though I'm sure I'll try it someday). I did enjoy the Siberian Black Magic Panther that I randomly found on my trip to Charleston, so I'm sure it's a great beer.

I really just stopped in to say thanks to the guys from Westbrook for doing a great job with all of the beers they make. You guys are consistently one of my favorite breweries in the south. Seasonal releases are a bitch when they reach this level of hype status, so congratulations for surviving last Friday and getting back to normal (at least until the BA release).

Yea that wasn't a serious comment, hence the smiley, just me having fun with all the local entitlement talk going on. With that said, I do like the idea of a brewery trying to reward it's year round customer base by giving them the greatest chance possible to get their hands on special/limited releases. Mexican Cake is a great beer and Westbrook sells out of it every year, but it's not the beer that pays the bills year round. One Claw, IPA, White Thai, etc are the beers that do that and it's the customers that buy these beers year round that keep the brewery profitable. So with that said, I do like the idea of a company (brewery) trying to give first opportunity to those customers, compared to people who drive/fly in from 2,000 miles away just to buy their limit of a special release and then don't give Westbrook another look until the next year's release.

I think Westbrook does a fantastic job of trying to reward locals through their last minute release announcements. It's a lot harder for the dude in California to get time off work, buy a plane ticket, book a rental car, and book a hotel room, just to attend a beer release if he has only two days notice. Also, doing the release on a Friday instead of the typical Saturday has the same effect on benefiting locals.

That's honestly about the best job any brewery can do with these type of events. Announce the release last minute and on a day that benefits those within close(r) proximity to the brewery. The state driver's license and zip code arguements are honestly stupid. Why should your proximity to a brewery grant you special access to special beers? There is definitley no direct correlation between living close to a brewery and drinking more of their beer compared to someone else. While obviously a SC resident's only release would benefit me in this case, it's still a stupid solution. I live in Columbia and I guarantee I drink more Westbrook during the year than plenty of Charleston residents, and I'm sure there's plenty of GA residents who drink a lot more Westbrook than I do.

There's no reasonable way to be completely fair with these kind of releases. Someone will always be out of town, not able to get off work, have a family emergency, get stuck in traffic, or get in a wreck on the way to the brewery. There will also always be people from five states away or from across the country who manage to get there for the release.

Maybe Westbrook should start making everyone save their receipts from the previous year of all their Westbrook purchases, both at the brewery, and from stores, bars, and restaurants throughout the distribution network, and then have everyone send them in a week prior to the release. Then @mikeincharleston can add up each person's purchases to see who is truly most deserving of a special Westbrook beer. I'm sure he will love this idea!

I totally understand this, I really do. I have absolutely no horse in this race but I've just been reading all of these posts and others like it related to other releases. I guess playing devils advocate, the issue is that if Westbrook were in...name any other city here...then I'm sure they would have locals drinking their beer as well. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can't fault those who don't live in Charleston for wanting to obtain such an amazing beer. You also can't fault them for not being regulars due to the location in which Westbrook opened. I'm sure if Westbrook were in Roanoke, I'd be a regular as well. I have a friend that lives in Charlotte (@Brdlist) and he sends me Gose on the regular at which time I return the favor with brews he can't get. So since we're helping "pay the bills" why can't we also get consideration in first opportunity?

Again, I'm not arguing nor do I care, just playing advocate here. Also, neither of us were at the release and are awaiting distro haha.

Limit 2 at Whole Foods. Had some left as of 2:45. Apparently some dude grabbed multiple cases before they could even get word to employees to limit them. Classy.

Wow. Dick move. For what it's worth that dude wasn't me, because (1) it's a dick move and (2) there is no way my wife would let me. FYI, you may also want to check the brewery.

    1) yes it is a dick move
    2) that's also partially on the store, they knew it was coming and obviously some one in charge had to acknowledge the fact that it was there before they put it on the shelves. If they wanted to have a limit they should have made their employees aware before they put it on the shelves.

Green's on Piney Grove is well stocked; they got in 18 cases apparently and have a 2 bottle limit.

Also, Morganelli's was supposed to get theirs in today and release it tomorrow (as of my convo with them yesterday) but from their FB page it looks like they moved it to Saturday.

With all the Mex Cake hitting distro, perhaps I won't need to trade my first born son for a bottle. if anyone reading this wants to trade one for some fresh Heady or White Oak Jai Alai, just let me know.
