Hello, quick question for my sister in law. She's staying in Westchester County for a few days, offered to grab any beer I might want but doesn't want to travel to the usual spots in NYC because of limited time. Any advice on bottle shops/breweries to hit in that area would be appreciated.

Sounds like she's also making a drive to visit a cousin in Larchmont one day, if anyone knows of anything along that route it would work as well. I'm struggling to find much of anything but I really don't know that area.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Captain Lawrence Brewing is the first thing that jumps to mind. They have an awesome, IMO, series of barrel aged "sour" beers. They update their beermenus page on a regular basis so you would have a good sense of what to request she bring back.

There's lots going on in Rockland across the bridge. There's a recent thread about options near (District 96 Brewery) that goes thorugh them.

Awesome thanks to both replies. I needed a starting point, that gives me something to work with. Much appreciated!

    @jaysker95
There's no need to go to NYC. Westchester is a big area though, so knowing where she will be staying will be a big help. Personally, I'd recommend stores over breweries, but that all depends on what you want. The Decicco & Sons supermarkets are a perfect destination, but some stores are better than others. There's a good one in Larchmont, so that should be easy for her. The difficult thing would be steering her to something you'd like without you actually in the store with her, but the staff at a good Deciccos would provide her with help. Very close to Larchmont is Half Time - which I would absolutely recommend if you were there, but I would pick Deciccos over it for your sister. Half Time is like a beer super store. It has bigger problems with old inventory than the nearby Deciccos. It might be a good choice for you/her though since you can buy anything there as a single.

Nice, thanks that's very useful. I'm finding out she may be in Larchmont more than anywhere else (especially with time to beer hunt) so I will point her to Deciccos. That said, would you say there are potentially more shelf gems at Half Time than what she'd find at Deciccos? Luckily for me, she's not a craft beer amateur so she'll be aware of canning dates on IPA's, etc.

I haven't been to Half Time in a bit but DeCicco's selection is top notch. Half Time is a much bigger store but if you're looking for fresh IPAs DeCicco's will do you right. Should be lots of fresh Interboro, Industrial Arts, some KCBC and others, along with some VT beers. Easy to spend way too much money "grocery shopping." They should have a fair amount of single cans too though expect to pay another $1 or so per can for breaking the 4-pack.

Another poster mentioned Captain Lawrence, good sours will always be there, they've been canning more (NE style) IPAs though you'd want to check on availability. Typically the most recent one or two would be at DeCicco's for what it's worth so if only one stop is being made, I'd send her there.

Cool. Definitely would love some fresh IPA's but I'm all about good sours as well. Do the Captain's Daughter sours go distro, or just the IPA's? Found out Captain's Daughter is about 35-40 minutes from where she'll be, so I like your advice of not making the trip if possible. But...now I kinda need some of those sours!

Tough to say. Eye of the beholder. I've only been to the Larchmont Deciccos a few times, and I probably haven't been to either in about a year - but I'd still consider either one a must if she's in Larchmont and wants to bring you back beer. Ardsley, Brewster, and Armonk also have good Deciccos. You can check their facebook pages for new releases. Crowler/growler lists are available on beermenus and the Half Time website.

Larchmont Deciccos is good if you want: a less overwhelming but well curated selection, helpful staff (although possibly located at the bar upstairs rather than near the beer in the coolers), refrigerated beer, crowlers to go.

Half Time is good if you want: singles from any sixpack (Deciccos will have some singles), hard to find imports.

I agree with @MrSimcoe 's post above. Keep in mind that it's "Captain Lawrence" and I'm only pointing that out because if she tries to pick up "Captain's Daughter" she'll be buying an entirely different beer. Deciccos usually stocks some Captain Lawrence sour beers, although the brewery might have a bigger selection (but Deciccos will obviously have plenty of choices from many other breweries).

I'm recommending the Deciccos because I would think that it's probably the easiest for her and she'll probably be able to get you something you'd appreciate.

Ok that pretty well makes up my decision, thanks a ton for the well-informed post. And Captain's Daughter...total slip on my part. Luckily I looked back in my texts to her and I did say Captain Lawrence! Their taplist looks intriguing for crowlers...I'll be keeping an eye on it as the time approaches. Maybe I can even get my Other Half and LIC fixes without her having to go too far. Thanks again for helping me out everybody!

For Other Half and LIC in Westchester, you’re pretty much going to need to stick to crowlers/growlers. You can use beermenus to see what’s at various locations. Beer Noggin is a small store that caters to geeks that also does growlers (and sells plenty of single cans). Deciccos is good if crowlers are the better transportation option over growlers. Deciccos will typically have 16oz can singles from places like Finback, Gun Hill, Singlecut, Threes, Barrier, (and Grimm if you’re lucky).

One of the owners of Beer Noggin here.

Your sister will be in good hands down in lower Westchester. The scene is quite robust now and she will definitely find some great beers on the shelf anywhere. Obviously, I would recommend coming to Beer Noggin. We are a small bottle shop & taproom so our selection is super lean and super fresh.

Feel free to shoot me a message on here when your sister is in town and I can go over our selection.

    Cheers!

Can't say no to that! You guys are all great! Thanks for the info and I will definitely pick your brain on what to look for. She'll be in the area this weekend.
