Originated as a table beer for the monastery – probably still used as such. You can buy it at the brewery on Friday mornings for some ridiculous cheap price at the brewery. For a long time it was brewed only twice per year & picking it up at the brewery was the only way to get it. As such it was relatively rare. It is actually distributed these days in Belgium, it is def. becoming more common.
As said above, it's Westmalle's table beer. I had it in the fall when I was there, it's nothing write home about. Try Chimay Doree for a similar beer.
It's a very nice (subtle) beer, but a luxury item at the prices I paid (in Belgium). I'd take it over a Doree any day.
It's good in a way that it's not overwhelming with any type of taste. It is pretty hard to acquire though which is a downer. Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy -Zeriods
