While I agree with you regarding having issues with the seller...especially given the back and forth on the facebook page (pure unadulterated ignorance from that Barry fellow) it's still a business. It's a ludicrous asking price which should sort itself out by it collecting dust on the shelf. But it won't.

I can shake my head at the business for re-selling it, but at the end of the day if consumers buy it, it's not going to stop them from doing it again...and again. Capitalism in a nutshell...if someone finds proof there's a market for something, they're going to maximize their profit.

Yes, and I'll go one further. Not only do you want to discourage this type of behavior by NOT buying it for that price, but I'd recommend going one further... Don't buy ANYTHING at this jerk's store! Period!

Why true in just about every state (and I'm assuming in NY too) - DC allows you to bring in your own beer and resell it if your distributor doesn't carry it (or if a distributer does carry it they have to carry enough for you to easily obtain it). Which is how some shops here can sell stuff for high markup - mainly because they have to pay for retail / shipping costs.

Although even with that in mind $99 is outrageous. I could see $30ish a bottle given shipping costs from Belgium.

I'm assuming the beer still has to be labeled with origin/warnings/barcode. This beer wouldn't be if it was straight from Belgium.

I'm fairly certain you don't - just have to pay the appropriate taxes. But all you have to do is slap a printed label on it. Pretty easy to do. Look at any Mexican coke floating around the US. Never looked for Westy in DC but I know of a shop that sells it (for a high markup too). I'm sure that's what he does (if he has to).

Sorry JMagee, but that has to be the biggest anti-advocacy post I've ever seen (even in jest).

Go on, I'm open to hearing your explanation on why you see it as anti-advocacy. To me on all levels of this issue...

Advocacy would be the store selling said product at a reasonable market that both rewards their investment and overhead, while making it reasonably available for all to purchase. Or even, in a perfect no problems at all in the world place, pouring out samples to frequent customers who would really appreciate the opportunity to try it.

Advocacy on the consumer end would be:
    1. Suggesting to the proprietors that this re-sale (independent of price) is probably going to lose them a few points with the good monks.
    2. Questioning the motives of the owners as to how they can justify such a mark-up. As seen on the facebook post their reasoning is neither sound nor reasonable. It's almost comically misplaced and seems like simple regurgitated talking points that should make people want to buy it."Best Beer in the World/Waiting List/Etc."
    3. Not buying the product because if they can sell out at $100 a bottle, it's more likely to be $110, not $90, next time. I know beer is a luxury, but when we start forgetting it's just beer and start paying exorbitant prices just so we can tick it and say we've had it, we start ruining our hobby.

But perhaps I'm equal parts cynic and idealist. I'd like to hear why you think it's anti-advocacy to disapprove of people who are supporting ridiculously un-advocacy based practices.

I am from the area, you can also hit up McBreen's Beverage in Lynbrook and Bev Barn in Garden City Park, both are no more than 15 min from the West Hemp shop...

DC's three tier laws do allow retailers to "self-import" beer from outside the district and pay the excise tax, but that does not exempt them from Federal TTB LABELING AND ADVERTISING OF MALT BEVERAGES regulation, which
"... applies to the several States of the United States, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico."

And any label "slapped" on would have to be approved by the TTB.
Soft drinks aren't regulated by the TTB.

You might not like this particular sale, but the very idea of shaming somebody for buying beer caused some flowers in my Biergarten to die.

    Perhaps I can relate.
