Whilst beer shopping today in Brooklyn I stopped into Eagle Provisions because they have an incredible selection and they are (slightly) less expensive then Bierkraft. I saw that behind the counter they received the Westy 12 box set thingy. Price tag: $400. Now, I understand mark ups, I do, but I thought that to be a bit much. Now I'm wondering: is this what we are going to have to expect to pay for this in this market? I certainly hope not. Next question: has anyone seen this for cheaper?
The agreement is that the sets imported into the US by Shelton Bros. are to have a MSRP set at $85. However, it is too early for those sets to be on the market. They haven't been brought into the US yet. So what you are seeing is a box set that was purchased in Europe and illegally brought over by someone. If a retailer wants to risk their license to sell beer buy selling a beer that hasn't been importend legally, they'll want to ask a high price for it. So you should pass it buy and wait until the legal stuff arrives. It may be marked up from the $85 MSRP but it probably won't come close to $400.
Or it was purchased at "The Festival" in Worcester a couple weeks ago for $85. Which is way more likely. That markup is awful though :-/
Eagle makes a habit of egregiously overcharging its beer customers, but that is just ridiculous. This is the place selling bombers of Cantillon Brouscella Grand Cru for like $90-100. Pass.
