Back on 12/12/12 Westy12 6 pack gift sets were being sold around the country. Recently I was made aware of one of these that is still unopened. I have an opportunity to purchase this, and I am actually curious what this might be worth now? cheers
They are asking way too much for me to spend, ($500). I did some research (google) and found that people have actually paid over $1000 for this? Thats insane, but I guess you have those out there that want this bad enough. I offered $150, but was denied. I've had the pleasure of drinking this before, and its good. Perhaps its a good deal since you can't get it here in the states, but its too much for me to even consider. $150 was my limit.
Just FYI... http://belgiuminabox.com/shop/authe...tbox-6-bttls-2-tasting-glas.html#.VMJLinvazm4 A buddy's wife travels to Brussels frequently. Last month, she shipped a case of Westy XII back stateside. Total cost was $300 ($12.50 a bottle). I've traded for Westy XII previously at a value of $20/bottle. $83 per bottle ($500/6pk) is just stupid in my mind. To each their own.
I gave Westy 12 as an Xtra in a trade. They where selling bricks a few years ago but it was pricy for my tastes.
I agree that 500 is ridiculous. I have bought Westy12 from Belgiuminabox.com and it is a great company to deal with. The guys name there is Kurt and I am told that he hand packs each order very carefully. I recommend them highly. I just looked and to order that 6pack with glasses and have it shipped to Charlotte NC would be $163.63.
I had a case of Westy 12 shipped from Belgium in a Box last May with the wooden crate for just over $400, so $500 is way overpriced. It broke down to about $18 a bottle with the ridiculous shipping costs. Granted the 12/12/12 bottles are now hitting their peak at just over 2 years old, I can't see giving them more than $25 a bottle.
Even the 150 you offered is ridiculous. You should be able to trade for one without too much trouble, or as others have said, buy online.
The retail price of $90 is still appropriate. And because I've enjoyed it much, I'd go up to $100. No further, however. Your offer of $150 was more than generous, in my opinion. And I think @LeeEvolved is correct. If we're really trying to affix a monetary value to six bottles of Westy (the nice goblets notwithstanding), age has to be a consideration. Westy has a window of several years during which it drinks excellently. But these bottles don't last forever--I hope the people selling this actually realize that.
Westy 12 is one of my favorite beers, and remains one of the best beers in the world in my opinion, especially at that 2 year mark. That being said, $500 is ridiculous and whoever is asking that much for it is a dbag. I think $150 is actually a pretty fair price, considering you get the two glasses in addition to the sixer. That would be about $20 a bottle for aged Westy and then $15 a piece for the glasses. Or alternatively, $25 a bottle with 2 free bonus glasses! Seems reasonable. Also, I am currently drinking a Westy 12 from the 2012 brick and its ridiculous, so maybe thats why I'd accept that $150 price tag right now.
They'll find someone that wants it bad enough to pay it. I read on another forum where a shop up in the Northeast was selling bottles at $50/ea. This kid bought 2 bottles because he wanted to share with his dad.
One of the West Coast online beer ordering sites (I will not saw the name because I do not approve of the consistent insane price gouging) has it fairly frequently. I think they charge $35-38 a bottle, and I believe they also require you fill your order with 5 other beers to fill a 6 bottle shipper. They do that "5 other beer" thing with most of their limited releases.
I can afford that price but would never pay that much for any beer. I find way too much that's excellent that I haven't tried to bother with messing with any of that way over-priced tiny production "status" beers. It reminds me of the late 90s and wine collectors buying "cult" cabs for outrageous prices- just to have them and to say so!
What abnormal prices you have to pay for WestVleteren Beers. Here in Europe, they go for a maximum of € 12.00 a bottle. and if you are lucky you can get an crate at the brewery, extremely cheap. Otherwise you pay around de € 200,00 for a crate of 24 bottles
I have not yet dealt with Belgium in a Box but, based on what I've read here, I would have no problem doing so. A couple friends and I chipped in and got some Westvleteren beers sent to us by through Trappist World and I would recommend them. We got 24 bottles (18 bottles of the '12' and three each of the other two) for right around $400 delivered to my door.
