    Hi Folks

Just wanted to hear people's thoughs about trading a 'white whale' for large quantities of limited but regularly released beers. As an example, something like multiple cases of bcbs, bcbccs or a large number of large format bottles that are harder to come to but definitely not 'whales' ie. ADWTD, Snowed In, Mexican Cake.....

These are all just examples and I'm sure they have different trade values and it would be poor form to talk about the FT unless I decide to actually post it for something.

    Thanks for any input

I see people attempting this quite often. Not sure about the success rate. As someone with ADWTD, I would probably trade one for a bunch of NE IPAs.

Depends on the person, it might be a little more common than people say. Nothing wrong with someone preferring a quantity of another spectacular beer over one "special" beer (that may or may not actually taste better) that's more rare or less common.

I did a version of this last year with some success, except I was trading the quantity and I wasnt getting true white whales. Traded a large quantity of BCBS barley wine for a King Henry then traded large quantity of BCBS coffee for '14 Prop on two occasions. Not easy to do, but can be done.

I think a lot of the reason people say / see it not get done is someone has snagged a whale that they then try to trade for a whole list of fairly limited "tier 2" bottles, often from multiple different distros. FT Blaeber; ISO De Garde + SARA + SP + Lunch + DB Huna. Ends up with a possibly not unfair/unreasonable ISO but not many people end up having enough of the limited set being sought to close the deal. The ones mentioned above -- 1 Rare for many of a single release are a lot more likely to be completed.

I traded a quantity of bourbon county stout, coffee and barley-wine for bramble. Just need to find the right trader, everyone is looking for something different. In my case I wanted a big bottle for tasting...

For those that traded (or received) a large quantity of say BCBS, what is a "large quantity"? You talking 4 reg, 4 coffee and 4 BW for one big bottle? Maybe 8 total?

At least one, I think 2 BVDL, were traded for a quantity of BCBS & BCBCS a few months back. The quantity was 1or 2 cases.

Imo, it was a win win. There was nothing ambiguous about the value of the BCBS. People were either willing to do it or not. For those willing it was a nice opportunity to acquire a very high demand beer with an excellent but much more obtainable beer.

I once traded Darkness x 4 for Assassin. He was happy and so was I.

I traded a case of BCBS for a '14 Blabaer 750. Not even close to white whale status, but definitely a whale. Both sides were happy.

Not a whale, but I've traded Mexican Cake for shelf beer that I can't get

I've done this a few times, trading whales for quantity of limited shelf/brewery only release. Usually I end up doing a 6 bottle shipper of a whale and some extremely limited locals in exchange for a porch bomb. It is difficult to accomplish because it's often hard to find the right someone that has the quantity of what you unless you open up to a very large list of wants. For example, I did the following in exchange for VR+ Nooner 8+ CCB Leon+ Rare DOS. I ended up sending him a 12 bottle shipper so I could extra him a few more bombers from CCB and Coppertail and some crowlers from Cycle (to help offset the insane shipping cost on his end):

    6x 2014 BCBW
    12x 2012 BCBS
    8x 2013 BCBS
    2x 2013 BBPt5
    2x 2014 BBPt5
    4x Central Waters BA Stout
    4x Dino Smores
    2x 2014 Stickee Monkey
    3x 2014 Parabola
    3x 2013 Sucaba
    4x 2014 Sucaba
    Trillium Pot & Kettle
    COAST Old Nuptial BA Barleywine
    Lawson's Maple Triple
    Lawson's Fayston Maple Imperial Stout
    2014 Black Tuesday
    Westbrook Red Wine Can Can
    ShawneeCraft Kriek Biere
    ShawneeCraft Frambozenbier
And some Hopping Frog (thrown in for my buddy from Cleveland)

I did 18 bottles for my VR + Prop 14. It was a mix of
    13 & 14 BCBW
    14 BCBCS
    Black Note
    12 & 13 BCBS

    Everyone was happy.

It's been since last fall since I did my trades, so I can't remember the exact specifics, but I want to say for King Henry I gave up like 12 total Barley Wines, a mix of 2013 and 2014, with most being 2014.

I think Prop I did 7 '14 BCBS Coffee and then like 5 more regular '14 BCBS for a total of 12 bottles again. I think I structured the Prop deal that way as I had enough bottles to do that twice.

I've traded big bottles a few different times for multiples of "lesser" bottles, but the only true whale I traded was '07 Cable Car for a couple DDG's, a V013, a couple Beats, and a Vig.

I traded 4 HF Shelf Saisons and 4 HF 750ml growlers for a Prop and VR. Neither are white whales but for me, I was able to walk in, grab the stuff and ship the next day so it was well worth it for me and the guy I traded with was 2 time zones away from HF so he was happy to get quantity as well.

Now that replies are turned off it's not such a problem, but you could still get messages. Here's the catch 22:

    FT: HT x16
    ISO: Rum BT

Peanut gallery: "Good luck" "You'll need something more rare."

    FT: Rum BT
    ISO: HT x16

Peanut Gallery: "You $50 of HT for a $30 BT? Nice job trying to win trades."

Personally, I think it's cool. If I had access to HT and I could trade a quantity of it for next level beers, I would do it all the time and smile ear to ear doing it. Unfortunately those types of beers are almost exclusive to Vermont.

Many times a person will want a large quantity for a gathering/event/party - so they are willing to give up something of whale magnitude or a step below. If you think about it, getting a large quantity of something like KBS or BCBS for this purpose is as difficult as grabbing certain whales.

Like always, it's just about having the right set of eyes on something/coming across someone that has a need.

I went in 50/50 with a buddy awhile back and traded a case of Black Note for a KBBS and a VSB 24:2. Both sides of the trade were happy.
