For me, IPA and DIPA are top. Stouts and imperial stouts are second. Third would be wild ales/lambics. But I am willing to try damn near any style at least once or twice. I absolutely hate some smoked beers and chili ales, but there are one or two that can be pretty good. (Rauchbiers are good... I specifically am thinking of ones made with peat-smoked malt. Ick.)

There are many styles that in their place and time are great beers. For my tastes I have two favorites. First, porters, both English and American, are my go-to beers that I always have in my little beer fridge. They vary enough, from American hopped and dark roasted beers that drink like a stout, to more balanced and traditional British styles, that it is almost like different styles altogether. I generally go for more easily found, and readily affordable, brands like Odell, Sierra Nevada, Deschutes, Anchor, Founder's, and then more traditional Samuel Smith and St.Peter's. But secondly, actually firstly, my favorites are Trappist dubbels and strong Belgian darks like Rochefort 6 and 8, and Chimay Red. I can just think of drinking them and feel better about the day!

I really don't care if you found the one random brewery that doesn't just refer to porters as ale.

In the US, it's accepted that ales are top fermenting beers, and lagers are bottom fermenting. That means that most people here call porters ales, as they do stouts.
