Trying a new beer after dinner -- first from the style or the brewery.

Tart Sour Ale, a Berliner weisse from Champion Brewing -- located somewhere in Virginia if I'm remembering right.

First thing notice is holy crap this is pale -- like, I think it may just be even paler yellow than a Bud Light. The color when pouring was like very slightly yellow-hinted water. I know "weiss" means "white" in German so weissbiers of all types are generally going to be light-colored, but just how light this is was a bit of a surprise. Huge bubbly fizzing head at first, but then it starts to shrink within seconds -- it was actually rising up over the top of the glass when first poured, so it shrank in just the few moments it took me to grab the camera and take this picture. At this point there is absolutely no trace of a head remaining. A good bit of bubbles rising up from the bottom, though.

Smell is pretty mild, but I can tell it's a sour beer -- there is a definite sour/acidic sort of smell to this, along with grain. Taste is... really interesting, actually. And good. Lots of almost lemony sourness right away, followed by a surprisingly rich grain-like malt flavor that lingers around in the mouth once the sourness has faded away after even just a tiny sip. This is only 3% ABV, too -- they packed a lot of flavor into such a little beer. Feel is light and bubbly, which seems to work well with the sourness and makes it easy to drink big gulps if you want to. Not noticing any changes in flavor in big gulps vs. sips, though as I drink more the nice multi-grain sort of malt flavor seems to shift into almost entirely an aftertaste presence while the main flavor when drinking is the sour lemony thing. In burps I'm getting a bit of a different fruitiness, not quite lemony like the initial flavor; not sure what that is. The one slight downside is that there's just a bit of a weirdness to the taste sometimes, right around the moment when the primary flavor changes over from lemony-sour to grainy-malty, which I almost want to say reminds me of... well, vomit. That sounds super gross when you put it that way, but there's something about the acidity blending with the malt flavors that gives off that impression at times. And yet, even after noticing that, I'm still drinking it and am not even a little grossed out, somehow. It just works, odd as it sounds.

Overall, this is a really interesting beer. It's pretty different from anything I've had before, even though I have had one sour beer before (an oud bruin) and several wheat beers. If this is a decent representation, I think it's safe to say that I like the Berliner weisse style. Only 4 IBU, only 3% ABV, and yet I'm finding this at least as flavorful as some of the 4-to-5% ABV range beers that I have on a regular basis. It's not something especially complex, the flavors are pretty much just lemony sourness and multi-grain-cereal malt, but they're both good flavors and they work nicely together (despite the slightly barfy way in which they mix sometimes.) I get the feeling this would've gone well with my meal earlier, too. I do have 5 more cans, so I'll have plenty of opportunities to try that out in the future.

I kinda get the impression that this is what a "light" beer should be like -- lower calories and alcohol, light and fizzy and drinkable, but still has a lot of flavor to it. Rather than just light, fizzy, and amazingly bland.

    Evening BA's!

Great posts yesterday for the Fifth Edition of BeerAdvocates Booknotes and Beers!!
    (Third Tuesday of the month)

I never knew how inspiring it would be to see great books next to great beers!
There were so many I wanted to comment on but didn't want to bog down the thread.

Thanks to WBAYDN BB&B, the list of books I now want to read is almost as long as
    my beer list. Almost!

Randomly stopped in, and who knew?!?? Well, someone and I could/should have, but definitely more fun to be surprised. Still pretty bourbon-forward, the barleywine comes through later in the taste. Plus I was able to get a howler of Old Pro!! Might need to keep it sealed until tomorrow after this stop.

Saw this for first time around me, probably grab one for the novelty.

Good evening/good morning! It's 7:45am Thursday and we're packing for flight today to Sydney where Sydney Craft Beer Week is underway. In the meantime, "Lazy Yak", a pale ale from Matilda Bay Brewing Co....a little fruit but mostly water:

Last night's dinner, a 1.5kg "mud crab" that comes from up the rivers that flow into the Coral Sea here in Cairns. Big as a small basketball and some of the sweetest crab meat I've ever had:

And a salt water crocodile sunning up the Daintree River I snapped on Tuesday during our rainforest/river tour:

Congrats on the weight loss. I am cutting down trying to get some off before a round birthday coming up. It is hard.
