Happy Halloween, BA's! Almost 9:30 here in spooky NOVA & I didn't expect to make an appearance here today, but I looked in the fridge & this was just staring back at me:

I mean, clearly, I didn't have a choice in the matter
& for the record, this brew is miles ahead of every other hopped-up Lager to ever pass my lips.

No better place for Halloween!

 

My first ever rauchbier. To be honest, I thought I was gonna hate it (I don't like smoked stuff too much in general) but I was determined to at least give it a try. Holy hell, did I like it! Sure, the smokiness is there and it's fairly strong, but the more you drink the less intense it feels and (ironically) the more you want to taste/smell it. Simply superb: Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen by Brauerei Heller-Trum / Schlenkerla (Bamberg, Germany)

 

Ghoul morning BAs! Today's Canadian Beer for Breakfast comes recommended by @TurkeyFeathers and Ryan at Lancaster Consumer Beverages:



A pumpkin beer that tastes of pumpkin, not just spices - what a novel concept! Each year I feel obligated to try examples of styles I don't like in hopes I'll find an example of the style that I do like. I have now found my third drinkable pumpkin-based brew.

Ok let's eat!

This is herbed soft cooked scrambled eggs and bacon with an American Pale Ale from Lagunitas. I left the eggs soft deliberately so that they would impart more flavors to the experience. The only herb I used was fresh parsley.

This beer pours clear, golden yellow amber with a creamy white head and good clarity. Pungent hops, light as a feather malt with a delicate ribbon of caramel. Spice herbal and citrus on the nose. taste is earthy grapefruit, candied lemon peel and strong with spice and grassy herbal. A steady moderate bitterness finishes this beer not with the caramel form malt to stand out but with the pungent herbal to remain in the aftertaste with a honey like sweet remnant of the malt. Steady bitterness that lingers well. Mouthfeel is medium.


The hops herbal is strong and well defined. The bitterness of it cuts the grease from the bacon but does not pair well with the buttered light toast. It washes down the eggs without washing out the flavor of them but the parsley is invisible and it seems to bring out the chalkiness in the egg.

The abv is 6.5% and that is IPA territory. I do not favor a bitter IPA with breakfast and I do not think this beer goes well with it either even though I think this beer is quite good.

I think she is resigned to the fact we are going to dress her up once a year (well, and maybe another time at Xmas)! The kitten on the other hand is fighting to get out of his get up

 

Cold, gray, windy, and now rain. Perfect weather - for an Expedition Stout, that is.
