Another early morning rise. What to have for breakfast? Coffee? Sure, but maybe later. How about something nice and hoppy?

A few years back I had visited Sioux Falls, South Dakota on a quick daytrip, with the intention of shooting some photos of the waterfalls that the town is known for. Even though I was already into craft beer back then (even though in a much more superficial way than I am today) I had completely neglected to sample any local beer while I was there. Given that South Dakota is one of the very few states from which I have not had a beer (the others being West Virginia, Arkansas, Wyoming and North Dakota - even though I have visited the latter) I was completely unable to resist buying a bottle or two of this beer when I came across it the other day. It's called Lilith and it's made by Hydra Brewing of Sioux Falls, and (if you believe BA) it's an American Blonde Ale. No info about bottling date (or anything else for that matter, except that it's dry hopped with Citra and has an ABV of 5%). At $10 a bottle it was a bit pricey for what it is (especially given that the bottles could have been old) but I was simply too curious about sampling it.

It has a fairly mild flavor, a bit like a watered down IPA, with some faint acidity thrown in. Not bad by any means but it doesn't showcase the aroma and flavor intensity that a dry-hopped beer usual has.

And a few shots from Sioux Falls as a bonus:

    Starting with a mocha theme . . .

Deep clear amber with orange highlights and white cap.

Intriguing aroma of coffee, cacao, resin and grapefruit.

I taste chocolate first quickly followed by coffee and piney hops. It's like someone poured half a beer, got distracted, then inadvertently topped it off with brew from a different bottle. A joltingly disjointed concoction that strangely works.

    Medium texture with balancing carbonation.

I want to know what happened to the other half of my beer. Next time I want a whole one, not this halfling. Seriously, I don't know what to think here. It's an interesting blend of styles that's pulled off with panache so I have to appreciate what they've done, still, I think I would prefer one or the other rather than both together.

Good morning BA, have a great Sunday! Just another usual day schedule over here. Laundry, bottle returns, and catching up on some work for tomorrow. Should be a pretty quick feeling week this time with the holiday coming up next week. A lot of people are taking vacation days at work, so it should be pretty mellow on the work emails. Looking forward to going down to visit my family next weekend(having a pre-birthday party. I'll be 30 two weeks from today). Also looking forward to seeing what new beers are in store lately down in Ohio. Been a few months.

Awesome coffee IPA! Flavors of big nutty medium roasted coffee, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, passion fruit, berry, orange peel, light pepper, and piney hop notes; with some toasted bread, light honey malt balance; and herbal, floral, grassy hop/coffee notes. Touch of cocoa, vanilla, and smoke from the coffee. Light-moderate pine/citrus peel/grassy bitterness on the finish. Medium bodied; balanced bready/grainy malts and hop stickiness in the mouthfeel. Light resins and increasing bitter dryness; no hop astringency at all. Very bright, juicy, and dank hops with balanced roasted coffee flavors; nice balancing malt backbone that is never sweet. Extremely drinkable and hoppy, without being overly aggressive and bitter. Love coffee IPAs. Almost finished my 3rd 4 pack of this, huge fan.

Very nice Scotch ale, finishing off the 4 pack. Flavors of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, leather, peat smoke, brown bread, biscuit, toasted oak, vanilla, raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, apricot, pear, apple, red grape, and light cocoa/nuttiness/salt. Bit of herbal hops. Touch of aroma booze. Light herbal hop/roast bitterness and whiskey/oak tannin spice on the finish against sweetness. Medium-full bodied bready creaminess; lightly slick, sticky, chalky, and tannic. Lightly increasing tannic oak dryness. Very drinkable, minimal warming 9.6%. Not as impressive as I'd hoped for, but still very well made for the style. This has plenty of leathery/peaty scotch and oak presence. Nice well rounded/rich malt complexity, and complimenting yeast fruitiness. Really delicious.

Insane NE IPA as always. Flavors of huge tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, lemon zest, orange peel, and light pepper/pine hops; with moderate honey, wheat, toasted bread, light caramel malt balance; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light pine/grassy/citrus peel bitterness on the finish. Medium-plus bodied bready creaminess with some hop stickiness in the mouthfeel. Slight resins and a lightly drying finish. Pretty similar to M-43, but this feels even more juicy and less dank from the darker malt bill; and the hop bitterness/dryness is lower as well. A lot smoother. Prefer this a bit more, but both are incredible. They just started dating the cans last month, instead of putting a batch number. 1 month old on this. Great move on their part. Hoping the other NE IPA series stuff starts making distro later in the year. This is less easily available than M-43, so I always grab it when I see it.

Just over a year old now. This was fantastic! Flavors of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, bourbon, peat smoke, scotch, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of raisin, cherry, plum, fig, orange peel, tobacco, leather, coffee, and charcoal. Light-moderate roast/char bitterness and bourbon/scotch/oak spice on the finish. Fairly full bodied creamy/silky mouthfeel; with some light sticky/chalky roast malt and bourbon/oak tannins as well. Lightly increasing roast/char/oaky tannin dryness. Dangerously smooth sipper. Mild pleasing warmth of 11.6%, no barrel booze. The balance and integration of barrel, spice, and malts is outstanding. Still plenty of barrel presence for being a 50% blend; both Bourbon and Scotch character come through in equal parts. Glad I grabbed another bottle randomly. These are always impressive every year. XXIX should be coming in the next few weeks. This year's version will have Dutch cocoa, Saigon cinnamon, and cayenne with; 50% aged in Bourbon and Rum barrels. Should be awesome.
