Good morning and Happy Tuesday BA!
Up today is a beer ive been waiting a long time to try and was finally able to procure a bottle earlier this year after a few failed trade attempts..Toppling Goliath's Morning Delight..a super rich and decadent maple coffee stout..it was worth the wait and what I had to trade to get it..Cheers!

Are you familiar with fernet spirits? Just curious, I haven't had that beer.

Tried to upload a picture but am too stupid. Drinking Born yesterday unfiltered. I really like the unfiltered and didn’t get it last year but it seems to have lost something flavor wise while gaining the haze. Still awesome, still dank smelling. 4.25/5

Yes. Can’t remember if it was The Commons or Upright who did a collaboration with The Hop & Vine a few years back. But it was a Fernet inspired beer that was very enjoyable.

I sorta had Thomas Hardy's once before. It was the O'Hanlon's version and it was 7 years old when I had it. It struck me as much "bigger" than this beer (alcohol presence, body, sweetness), but there are many variables in play here, including the age of that bottle, brewer, and my own flawed perspective. This beer has a noticeable hoppy quality to it and the body is relatively lean.

This beer was produced by Meantime... which was purchased by SAB Miller in 2015... and then I think was sold to Asahi as a result of the AB InBev acquisition.

If this is the same beer as the 2016 edition, then it's made with cane sugar, top fermenting yeast, Marris Otter malt, crystal malt, Fuggle and Golding hops. It appears that this ale is no longer made with "lager yeast."

Learning from US craft beer marketing, Meantime also produced a variant called "The Historical Ale." The 2016 version was aged in cognac barrels. The justification for this is that the first brewing of Thomas Hardy's Ale in 1967/68 was aged in sherry barrels. Seems like an odd name for the beer given the specifics. I have no idea if the first brew's aging in sherry barrels contributed a specific "sherry flavor"... if it was even intended to or if they were simply looked at as barrels.

I really like this beer. I especially like the balance and how relatively low-key it is considering today's climate and the pressures to adapt to it. I generally like my beer "fresh," but I can honestly imagine that this beer will do well aged.

    Cocoa, vanilla, cardamom.

This is the 39th beer ive had from them. Awesome considering im in NJ and not Maryland. Im missing their oyster stout, abbey ale and their wet hop. Other than that its all the single hop and rarities beers that got me so far. Easily one of my favorite brewers for being able to do such odd recipes that end up outstanding. If i can get my hands on their mustard ipa id be stoked.
    Cheers

First beer of the day and it's after 4pm here...I haven't had my usual morning stout in 6 weeks, and I've lost 10 pounds..."Pale Ale" by cervezas ilunica:

Made with Cascade, Mandarina Bavaria, Simcoe and Mosaic hops. Skunky very lite bitter citrus rind, caramel base, slight onion finish. More skunk than citrus flavours. Drinks more like a lightly bitter IPA, nevertheless tasty!

The original Sierra Nevada mountains in the distance, with miles and miles of olive groves inbetween, shot from this mountain top town:

After some snacks, beer (and Sherry!), we are off to an olive oil seminar and tasting this evening. Cheers from Ubeda!
