What beer are you drinking now? #2019

A little late to the party after a haircut and an errand (and another overnight) but Sand City continues to kill it. A buddy picked me up some of these yesterday and these are fucking fantastic right out the box. Cheers all.

One thing I like about overnights is that my work day is over. One thing I hate about it (other than, you know, working all goddamned night) is that I’m going to sleep through a lot of this beautiful day.

 

Jever Fun, a non-alcoholic pilsner from Germany.

The best thing I like about this one is that it’s not sweet like most Dutch non-alcoholic beers. Some grassy bitterness, I like that. Nice alternative to have with a meal when you can’t have alcohol.

Happy MAY DAY!

 

It was in the 40s when we got up this morning and it's still cool out there. Something with a bit of substance is called for . . .



Dark mahogany brown with gold highlights around the edges. Good tan cap and decent lacing.

Herbal, spicy, slightly coffeeish, toffeeish aroma with something like dark figs in the background. Not really catching any hops but these heavy flavors usually cover that up anyway.


Taste on entry is dark toffee quickly followed by the herbal element. Don't know exactly what that element is, perhaps a lager yeast at warmer temperature fermentation has created that but it's in there and it taste good. Mid palate I'm getting more of the plummy, ripe fig influence which is just adding layers to the first impression flavors. Spicy, clove like threads weave in by the finish and linger in the aftertaste along with a touch of coffee but no roast bitterness.

First sips were a bit of a peculiar taste, but after getting used it’s rather nice.

So, I cracked this yesterday afternoon, didn't finish the bottle, and then sealed with the pictured stopper. Still damn good. Also, and this is rather embarrassing, I posted this beer yesterday on a thread that started with the two words "What Beer" and went on my merry way.

I met a kid in the biz who worked in sales for Stone Brewing a few years ago. He moved to Smuttynose, and now he's with Great Divide. We've shared many a beer over the years. This 12 year old beer in that old school IRS glass is a tribute to his recent fatherhood and his present birthday.
