Drinking Spendrups Bright Brew. 5% abv. It's one of two surviving Swedish lower calorie brands of beer. This one has about 117 calories per 12oz so a bit more than a Bud Light at 110 or a Miller Lite at 96 calories, but at 5% abv instead of 4.2%. It's also all malt. In the marketing of this beer back when it was launched they emphasised that a beer could still have flavor despite being low carb since "most of the flavor is in the hops", and they claimed that it has a slightly higher bitterness than a regular beer. You pick up the hops a bit in the aroma but it's nothing which sets it apart from alot of regular Swedish Export brands, and after a while it becomes quite muted. Tastewise it is quite mild with a mild German hop note and a definite dryness which sets it apart from a Swedish Export, one can tell that they have fermented out much of the residual extract leaving a dry beer.

The bitterness is typical for a Swedish Export and quite balanced. The aftertaste is dry and very clean. The head retention is lousy and dies off like on a soda after the initial surge of carbonation. It's basically a Swedish Export where they gutted the malt backbone of it to lower the calories and carbs. I personally don't see the point with beers like these but I can't help but be fascinated at times by its continued existence so I buy a can every few years to check in on it. The beers following this one will be Export beers from the same brewery which I enjoy a great deal more.

 

Only thing the crap weather today is good for is staying inside and drinking beer.
