Let me join mr. @JamFuel at the virtual bar for a quick one before we hit the beach again...this is a good one. I think I actually prefer this one to the Pernicious. Lives up to its name for sure...even at almost 2 months old has a Danky resiness that hits the spot. Cheers.

Last post for a while, on my annual beer break (only a week this time). Last of my Hotbox... Cheers all!

 

a little insight on what goes into making a simple commercial like this - we shot this over the course of 3 days on the Deerfield River in Massachusetts, as well as another day up front to tech scout -back in September '17 and it's just airing now - and of course the director of photography says the light is better on the opposite side of the river from our access point, so we'll have to cross the river with all the gear - the flow of the river is governed by a power company owned dam a few miles upriver - in the morning hours the river is a nice, wadeable flow - by 10:30 am the dam release brings the water level up a good 3 feet - with force - I forget what the cubic feet per second measurement was, but it's substantial -enough to sweep you off your feet- the location manager assured us on the tech scout that he talked to who ever was in charge of regulating the flow and that the dam would not release on the 2 days we were supposed to film - when we arrived on the shoot day around noon the river was raging whitewater - apparently he didn't talk to the right person - so the first day is a bust and they shoot some close-up inserts of the actor on the shore - they also decide that I'll need to build some kind of underwater platform to support rocks for the gecko puppet to walk out on -
they hire a stunt coordinator who smartly rigs a clothesline type of affair across the width of the river for us to haul the gear across - we start early on the 2nd day - by 11am the river is rising and it's "everybody out" - we load up quickly and make the somewhat treacherous crossing - they decide to shoot some more inserts just off the shore of our access point, like the gecko's floating waders - the director wants to recreate the rocks that were on the other side of the river and yells at me for not bringing them across with the gear - fuck that shit - here's some other rocks right here - they add a day of shooting to get that opening wide shot
which has the location manager dressed as the actor and casting the fly rod and we're done nice and early - the gecko you see is post-production CGI but I have to rig this bendable puppet as it's 'stand in' for every shot - there were 40 people on location and around 20 crew people in the river when we were shooting - the rocks on the platform I had to rig never make it into the final cut - all that for that - (btw - the actor also played Bub the zombie in 1985's Day of the Dead)
