What beer are you drinking now? #2230

Deep ruby red gold, striking color, minor cap and lacing.

Clean aroma of floral, spicy hops over a layer of caramel malt.

Taste is rich malt lightly spiced with hops. An almost buttery malt (Munich, Vienna, Pilsner and Melanoidin) with the depth of the malt varieties used. The brewer lists only Bravo hops for an IBU rating of 24. I don't know if there are other hop varieties in there but this one is enough and will serve. I get floral/spicy along with just enough bittering that kicks in mid palate and lasts into the aftertaste, which leaves with an impression of clean freshness. An interesting juxtaposition between malt richness and hop bitterness offsetting each other in a way that is complementary yet both distinctly separate and running smoothly on parallel tracks. I don't know if this is what the brewer intended but it works.

If you handed this to me at a blind tasting I would say Irish Red Ale from the appearance and aroma, then the same thing after tasting it even though it is a lager. Well, the lager smoothness might register if this was the first one of the flight, or at least I like to think so. It's a darn good swing and hit at an Oktoberfest Marzen though, enough malt heft and hop smack to land it well up in the bleachers.

Inspired by @bstyle with the 2012 bottle yesterday, I decided to open one of my 2014er's. There's 2012's somewhere in that basement of boxes! Two years aside, it's still money in the bank.

New Belgium Mary jane pale ale, pretty solid winter mix pack from those guys. It includes a Belgian white, black ipa, white ipa and this pale ale. A nice light winter beer offering.
