Fantastic batch this year as usual. Aromas and flavors of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty dark roasted coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, fudge, marshmallow, vanilla, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of coconut, licorice, molasses, dark fruit, smoke, char, leather, and tobacco. Touch of booze in the aromas as it warmed. Mild roast/char bitterness and rye whiskey/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Light-medium carbonation and full body; with a very creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that is fantastic. Slight slickness, stickiness, chalky roast, whiskey/oak tannins, and increasing dryness. Lightly increasing warmth of 12.9%, with a touch of barrel booze lingering after the finish. Amazing balance of rich malts, fruity/nutty coffee complexity, and barrel presence/integration. Not overly boozy, tannic, drying on barrels. Love it more with age, still amazing fresh. Wish they would have kept the 6 packs, but I will definitely get a few more bombers to enjoy during the year.

2015. Amazing as expected. Aromas and flavors of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, fudge, vanilla, bourbon, nuts, toasted oak, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of coconut, licorice, molasses, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Slight booze in the aromas as it warms. Mild herbal, roast, char bitterness; and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Light-medium carbonation and very full body. Very creamy, silky, velvety, rich mouthfeel. Light slickness, sticky hops, chalky char/roast, oak tannins, and increasing dryness. No cloying, acrid flavors. Mildly increasing warmth of 13.7%, no barrel booze. Dangerously smooth sipping. Not the best vintage I've had, but still incredible. Perfectly balanced rich malts and bourbon barrel presence/integration. Not overly boozy, tannic, drying on barrels. Got most of the variants this year to review soon. Did the orange last night for 7700th.

Good morning and Happy Saturday. Enjoying a little breakfast on the deck while awaiting the tile guy's arrival. First time I've had the barrel aged version of 4Beans. Taste is starting off very good, letting it slowly warm from refrig temp. Big game today as Army takes on Navy in a series that began in 1890 at West Point. After 14 years of Navy dominance, Army has won the last two. The game marks the end of the college football regular season and the third and final game of the season's Commander-in-Chief's Trophy series, which also includes the Air Force Falcons of the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) near Colorado Springs, Colorado. Here's to a great game, cheers mates!

Today is the annual day to honor Dimbag Darrell Abbott. I celebrate on this day every year, but this is the first time after his brother, Vinnie Paul Abbott, was reunited with him, after his death this summer, so it is an extra-special occasion. And, I must not forget to honor John Lennon as well. The ABV on this beer is a bit much for my preference, and it might be a bit too sweet for what I like. I think the Bell's BBA Expedition Stout that I had last weekend, set an impossible standard for other BBA stouts to live up to.

Fantastic DIPA. Aromas and flavors of huge red grapefruit, mandarin orange, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, blueberry, gooseberry, citrus peel/zest, light peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate cracker, biscuit dough, light honeyed malt sweetness; and herbal, floral, grassy hops earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; balanced creamy/bready/grainy malt and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Light resins/rinds, light-moderate increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Super smooth, not aggressive, minimal warming 8.5%. Amazing Mosaic, Citra, Simcoe profile. Extremely juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hop complexity; great bready malt backbone, not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. Best of the series I've had so far. Too bad it is the last one.

Good morning, BAs! Today I woke up and decided, once I was ready to cook brunch, I'd do a little beer share with my roommate.

..... wait, I live alone with a dog and a cat? And it's not healthy to give beer to either of them?

Crap. Guess I'll have to do a beer share with myself, then.

A little backstory: I love Founders Breakfast Stout. When it was an annual release, I'd buy a case, and slowly drink it over the course of the year. It was always nice to have a few bottles in the 1-2 year range, just for funsies.

But now that it's available year-round, that approach isn't necessary. Consequently, my 2017 stock had dwindled, and I hadn't replaced it with any 2018 bottles - yet. I started to wonder, "Hmmm, I wonder what the difference in taste really is?"

The four pack of 2018 I grabbed the other day is, remarkably, 11 months and 1 week younger than the 2017 bottles I have left; a wonderfully coincidental comparison point!

The 2017 pours a touch thinner with less head production (and retention); not a surprise. The coffee is still quite strong (not a surprise to me, since all I've been drinking are the 2017s, after all), but it is relatively thin, and just a touch oxidized.

The 2018, if not exactly thicker, is definitely creamier, and more bitter - more roasty, really. Both are bitter, chocolatey, coffee.....-ee, thick, and smooth. The 2018 seems to present more bitter chocolate, really, as perhaps the most identifiable flavor difference (other than that very slight oxidation). They're remarkably similar.

Final recommendation: FBS is better fresh, but not by such a wide margin that this isn't a beer that you can age without trepidation. The older bottles hold up quite well, and the overall experience is close enough to identical that, if I weren't drinking them side by side, it would be impossible, really, to identify which is which (if one were to hypothetically drink only one ... but then again, why would you do that???).

    Cheers!

Singlecut is overpriced in Philly (almost $8 a can), but I keep buying them since they are occasionally amazing. And always at least very good. This one is the latter.

For a more reasonable price...say $6...I would buy Singlecut all the time. But at $8 it’s a once in a while splurge.
