Bad storms all morning. Hanging out in the basement drinking rated beer #1500.

 

It is a scorcher today and I’m about to dig into this new beer from @jkblr and also get the American Dark Wheat Ale style reviewed!

This is a top 10 beer for me as well. Keep passing it up searching for new, need to pick up the next time I'm in the store. I never had a West 12, but I also enjoy Abt 12 and should pick up a few the next time I'm shopping as well.

I like a nice balanced stout, but there are several well crafted pastry stouts out there, and this definitely fits the bill. So glad I hunted this down after several WBAYDN recommendations in June. Central Waters, 3 Sheeps and New Glarus are my Wisconsin Trinity of Beers.

Probably hop, IBU- and ABV-inflated scores, but something about a beer near the top of its possible path... this is it.
a) Filters hazed bomb over rocky lasting head and amber, semi-haze body.
s) Resin, herb, flowershop, spice, syrup, hemp.
t) All the above plus fragrant perfumes of fruits like ripening rinds of grapefruit, mandarin orange, nectarine, cantaloupe, pineapple, mango, apricot
f) Full texture, honey, booze, but drying, barley wine? no! Brandy-like!
o) Almost a palate burner.

When the numbers all come up 4, I give a 4.25 overall.
a) hazed light orange body that throws a 1 figure head but lacks lace.
s) Tangerine, orange-flesh tropical fruit, orange rind, candied and marmalade.
t) Follows aroma - As 1 reviewer wrote "Semi-sweet with touch of Cointreau".
M: Mid-bodied, moderate carbonation, tangy, summery, light.
O: Low on caramel malt, high on orangeade.

3rd Review. Love brewer, but this is overboard for a summer DIPA.
a) Orange hazed flattish no lace pour.
s) orange soda (Crush) comes to mind rather than say Screwdriver (a highschoolers' drink).
t) Mono-dimensional orange forward almost to point of being a screwdriver with some much sweetened orange and alcohol present.
f) Tooth coater is the last thing wanted on the summer beach.
o) Back to tub please...

Chimay 2014 Grande Réserve.

It is the usual Chimay Blue, but bomber sized and corcked. The small ones also have a year label by the way. I understood the large bottles work better when keeping the beer for some years. No complaints. Popped like a good Champagne and not much loss of alcohol. Edges of the later being rounded off nicely.

This is the second Grande Réserve I opened recently. First also turned out very nice. Good beer for stashing away for some time (and to have some beer for you never know).
