My 21st involved surfing on a bannister at a concert, my manager at Blockbuster buying me a prairie fire shot (tequila and hot sauce for the uninitiated) and telling me it was watermelon schnapps, and then throwing up when we got home. I hope the nephew’s doesn’t involve any of the three.

Best part was after my friends up cleaned the bathroom after I puked, my twin brother decided it was his turn to mess it up and he rode the porcelain bus. Even 21 years later, I led the way for us.

 

Perfect weather for gardening and a great beer to accompany it.

Memorial Day. Miller Time. And that's all I got to say about that.

 

Just opened a Chuckee Larmz, from Lough Gill Brewery in County Sligo, Republic of Ireland. Not a bad chocolate pastry stout, if that's what you like. Bills itself as an "Imperial Marshmallow Lucky Charm Milk Stout."

Lucky Charms is, of course, the American made breakfast cereal with the Leprechaun on the box, who, in TV and radio advertising tries to hide it from some kids, who inevitably outsmart him, and, after losing them, he recites the tag line, "they're magically delicious." Clearly no trace of the cereal or the marshmallows in the flavor profile, which is a blessing, because I've found marshmallows often impart a rather stale flavor to the beer.

Rather strange that a Republic of Ireland brewery would risk copyright infringement with a major US manufacturer like General Mills with zero value added; I tend to think there is as much or more worry about this in the EU than here. Basically, picture this as 9.1% ABV chocolate soda.

Kettlehead Northern Hemi



From a pint can with no date marking.

Pours into my tulip glass a fully opaque dark amber color with a tight creamy cream colored head. Abundant fluffy lace.

Scent is sweet oranges, pineapple, tropical fruit

Taste follows the nose. Tropical fruit. Pineapples, guava, mango passionfruit. Green melon. Summer stone fruit - peach. Nicely building bitterness in the finish. Just a hint of alcohol warming in the finish. This is 10% ABV after all.

Mouth is full but slightly chalky.

Other than the touch of warming in the throat the high alcohol is hidden well. Another tasty brew from Kettlehead.

Geez! We didn’t really need to deface the beer, Pooh. Even though UVa did just win a second straight national lacrosse title, doing what our basketball team could not.

The Ocelot wine barrel wee heavy Gravity Always Wins was not harmed in making this photo.

 

Firepit, beer, and music have kept me company during the gardening.
