Like @DoctorZombies - I got out for a good walk - one that was actually refreshing in this nice morning in VA. Decided to let someone else pour out beers and prepare our food while watching the Olympics.


Some Falcon Smash from Triple Crossing out of Richmond - hazy but a nice lingering bitterness on this one.

Happy Saturday BA's! Big Nose and a bacon cheeseburger at Crazy Cucumber.

 

Broke out the "big" glass for this basement beer with a few years on it. PBR drinking wife thinks it should be colder but I'm good with the basement closet floor temperature.

 

Good Saturday afternoon, BAs. I’m at Ludlam Island Brewing. They have a new English Pale Mild, hopped up with Elixir, served on cask, called Forest Floor. It’s terrific! Great depth of flavor. Ludlam always has very good brews on cask. It’s a fine first beer of the day. Cheers!

 

My painting project has been interrupted by multiple texts re: the unexpected passing of my friend and one of our Country Monday crew at the pub…Tommy was a heathy, fit 68 pal who liked white wine and found us beer geeks humorous…he will be missed…

Back on the job with an assist from “Furious” IPA by Surly Brewing, from a variety pack I grabbed as I exited Wisconsin last Sunday (thanks for the detour @ChicagoJ ):

Happy Saturday. Had a Paloma at brunch. Marg at the Soulard Market and now at Civil Life...Dark Czech Lager and Northern English Brown Ale...

 

Let it Shine, an American IPA. El Dorado in the boil and dry-hopped with Idaho 7 and CTZ. Wow, this one’s under rthe radar here but I think it just may be the best IPA Ludlam has brewed. I like it more than their flagship, Water, Guns and Rainbows. Cheers from Woodbine, NJ!

 

Re-trying an Alesong barley wine I previously rated, trying to figure out what the rules of rugby are. Really kind of difficult without sound. Not sure if the 13.9% Maestro (HH barrels) will help or hinder;

1) Portage Chatter Chatter (4.8%): A Czech Pils from Minnesota with flavors of lemon citrus, earthy bread malts. Salted and buttery notes.
versus
2) Utepils Keller Pils (5.0%): A Czech Kellerbier from Minnesota with flavors of smooth bread malts and yeast. Moderately bitter. (Mismatched the two beers blind)

Winner: Portage Chatter Chatter
Czech Pils Battle. First is Portage. An impressive Czech Pils. Salty, buttery, and smooth. Very well done.
Next is Utepils Keller Pils, an unfiltered Czech Pils. Drinks similar, but slightly more yeasty and dry.
A close battle. I like the grainy malt notes from the unfiltered Utepils beer, but Portage has some flavors that are reminiscent of Pilsner Urquell. Both excellent, I'm going take both of these up with some future beer battles.
