Meeting a friend for dinner who’s in LA for work, so came early to beat the traffic and stop at highland park. Really tasty WC IPA called competition. Name makes sense as it has all the “good” hops: mosaic, citra, simcoe and strata. I do have a couple gripes.

1st the cost says $9, which is already high but fairly standard these days but it doesn’t include tax. Not sure why but I’ve been conditioned to see beer prices and think that includes tax. So essentially the beer is almost $10.

2nd there was a fairly large amount of head. The pic below is after one drink. With the top of a shaker pint being so wide I feel like it was too much head.

3rd a brewery that is as good, popular, successful and known for IPAs they serve them in boring ass shaker pints.

I’m here alone so I have time to gripe. At least beer is top notch. Cheers

Damn I can’t get my picture to post.

Time to enjoy the great outdoors… if the mosquitoes will let me. Little light reading with a lock Oktoberfest offering from Right Proper.

The few years old now DFH book is a fun read. Some of the stories I was aware of, many not. The beer nostalgia is thick, though. Hope they bring back some old offerings more often than the dribble we’ve seen recently. Doubtful, but one can always hope.

Imgur screwed things up on their links, especially in their app… gotta do some doctoring, sadly. It’s damn near not worth it.

I did it in my quote of you so people could see.

    1) Drekker Hop Diss Track (6.8% no canning date): A West-Coast IPA from North Dakota with Columbus Cryo, Simcoe, and Krush for flavors of orange, grapefruit, stonefruit, and bitter pine.
    versus
    2) Toppling Goliath Dino Break (8.5% canned 8/1/2025): A West-Coast IPA from Iowa with Simcoe, Amarillo, and Centennial for flavors of ripe orange, sweet apricot, tropical berries. (Correctly matched the two blind)

Friday West-Coast IPA Battle. First is Drekker Hop Diss Track. West-coast Columbus plus Simcoe and Krush. Authentic flavors with some stonefruit. Bitter and excellent.
Next is Toppling Goliath. Higher ABV. A bit sweeter. Similar bitterness. The sweetness is a bit overpowering for a WCIPA here. I actually really like Drekker's WCIPA and giving it the win.
    Winner: Drekker Hop Diss Track

That perch looks delicious. I have not had perch since I used to catch them as a teenager in the lakes behind the house. And I haven’t been a teenager in decades if I ever actually was one. My next visit to the seafood I am going to ask if they ever get perch.

Best version of Freeway Jam is that one - the OG. Here's a version by Lee Ritenour and Mike Stern which is pretty good. I loved it when they were trading four's! It's actually a killer version of the tune!!
