Been craving stout lately... a seasonal thing I guess.

Despite being a big name brand, original Guinness is a perpetual fave of mine.

Philadelphia PA 4.8%
It seems to be a little over carbonated.
Head for days. It's really not that great. Something tastes off, and I can't put my finger on it. Still, definitely drinkable, but I wouldn't get it again.

Absolutely will never ever ever get old

 

1) Kostritzer Schwarzbier (4.8%): A German Schwarzbier with flavors of dark malt, cocoa, some roast.
versus
2) Fair State Black Pils (4.9%): A German Dark Lager from Minnesota with flavors of dark grains, bittersweet cocoa and earthy notes. Bitter and roasted.

Forgot to post the first one earlier so both battles in one post right now...
First is a German Schwarzbier versus Black Pils battle. First is Kostritzer. Dark and earthy malt, mild roast. Nice dark German flavors. Next Fair State Black Pils. Similar, but more black malt, cocoa, and roast. Also more bitter. More flavor and bitterness overall. This is a new beer to me this year, but excellent.
Winner: Fair State Black Pils


1) Parish Ghost Prime (8.0% canned 11/3/2025): A NEIPA from Louisiana with Citra for flavors of orange, pine, floral citrus, with smooth peach and grains.
versus
2) Mortalis Ceres (8.0% no canning date): A NEIPA from NY with Citra, Simcoe, and NZ Mega Terps for flavors of lemon/lime, pineapple, and mango. (Correctly matched the four blind)

Next is a Parish versus Mortalis IPA Battle. First is Parish Ghost Prime. All Citra. Creamy orange with some mango and peach notes. Strong malt body, incredibly smooth. Up against, Mortalis Ceres with the addition of some Simcoe and NZ hops. Similar, upfront but more juicy and tropical notes. Not quite as smooth, but makes up for it with juiciness. The flavors and complexity here are amazing.
Winner: Mortalis Ceres

 

Visiting my sister in Florida. Today we visited The Imagine, a glass museum in St. Petersburg. Beautiful works of art; I could have taken 100 pictures. As luck would have it, Green Bench Brewery was virtually around the corner. I picked up a 4pack of Super Plug, a barrel aged doppelbock. A nice beer for a cool and cloudy day.

 

It still comes in bottles here. It would be interesting to do a side by side.

 

Labietis beers are everywhere in Riga. They are really nice. Lots of common beer styles but also several weird ones.

 

Bazinga!!

 

Another Guinness? Yes.

They waxed & buffed that street just for you brother

 

It's a super clean city. Wish ours were like that. Took this photo on an early morning walk with very few folks around. Fresh coat of ice/snow/sleet, hence how shiny it all is.

 

Getting into a Sierra Nevada 2024 Society brew, a barleywine that was turned into a rum barrel inspired cocktail with coconut and pineapple. This was part of the Day Drinks theme, very well done and it has aged well.
