Yes I also find it interesting to compare a blood orange APA to a blood orange IPA but then again I haven't had Grapefruit Sculpin and I have personally compared CitruSinensis to Flying Dog Bloodline IPA and Elysian Superfuzz which is also an APA. I have also had Burnt Hickory Didjits which is a DIPA and was my first time with a blood orange ale. In conclusion, I like all of them but each one has a characteristic that is unique in comparison to the others.

point taken and agreed with completely....I fell into the trap

comparisons running amok on site....and I succumbed

I enjoy both...both bring different profiles and vibe overall...not a legit straight comparison

    great call on your part

I've got some Revolver Blood & Honey in the fridge. It's a wheat ale with blood orange and honey. Nowhere near an APA or IPA, but really tasty.

I think the quick comparison exists because both breweries are heavyweights and these are their citrus-infused ales. I have had a few other citrus spiked beers where my reaction was, "OK, I'll take your word for it that some citrus was added, but I'm not really getting it." In these two, the citrus is right up front, and at the finish for that matter.

In my opinion (and it should be taken very lightly), the citrus in Citrusinensis just becomes part of the beer more so than the addition in GF Sculpin where it seems to exist in a more parallel fashion to the base beer. Lord, I sound like an idiot...

Breakside / Fremont Back to the Future IPA. A bit soapy for my taste, but overall not too bad.

No need to admit defeat, I think the comparison is somewhat natural. There is a reason that so many of us have done it, and I just find it interesting. As I mentioned, I did the same thing myself. They are both really good beers with infused citrus, the end result is somewhat different though...

Citrusenisis just hasn't made it out my way unfortunately, but I must say that the grapefruit aspect of GF Sculpin has always read as a bit forced & artificial to me.

Ah yes, Ted... the Motor City Madman. I thought the nickname had to do with his musical style. I didn't realize back then that he really IS crazy

I get what you are suggesting. My take isn't so much that it is forced or artificial. Rather my interpretation is that the citrus component in GF Sculpin presents itself alongside the base IPA, whereas the blood orange in Citrusinensis becomes part of the overall presentation.
