Montana - for beers found widely elsewhere, Big Sky Moose Drool
But the real answer is Kettlehouse Cold Smoke Scotch Ale

Your reference may be highest rating in terms of score, my rating was "popular" based on the number of BA posters who have rated a beer on beer advocate.

I agree there are better beers from several of the states listed, including the ones you referenced. I also agree it wasn't necessarily the intent of the thread to list the most popular or widely sold beers, but rather the beers which best represent the state. Budweiser and Pabst/Miller capture the broadest mind-share in terms of the general public, but for most beer drinkers who have tried beers beyond large macro offerings, they will find other brewers and offerings represent the state better, at least in terms of quality over quantity.

I'm hitting five states over the next two weeks in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, would hit Abraxas founded by a former GI brewer if I had the time. Will hit Central Waters, 3 Sheeps, New Glarus, Surly, Toppling Goliath, Three Floyds and 18th Street (the last two return visits) among others. That said, I would like to tour the Pabst plant if in Milwaukee when tours are available (not this trip), I',m always interest in experiencing and learning about beer and beer history.

I'd nominate God Complex by The North Brewery simply because New Yorkers tend to believe they're best at everything.

For Illinois I would have to say either Goose Island IPA or Oktoberfest, Revolution Brewery Pack of Hero’s. I use to say Goose Island Four Star Pilsner but they stopped Brewing it unfortunately.
