Surly anything sounds like a winner to me, considering where you live. Cheers, and welcome back to the nectar of the Gods. :grinning:

I'd probably drink the beer that got me into craft beer in the first place. For me that would be Founder's Red Rye.

The ABV thing isn't a big deal, especially if you're not planning on drinking a bunch. I have to occasionally go through several months worth of sobriety at a time, and I've never had a problem adjusting to high ABV beverages - especially one at a time.

Instead, I'd use this opportunity to think about all the beers you've had, and thought were fantastic, but maybe don't visit as often - regardless of rarity or ABV. Loved Heady Topper? Go get you some, and celebrate! Does Founders All Day IPA just seem to hit the spot? Go buy a bunch, and knock down a few. Rochefort 10 blow your mind, but you never seem to get to it because of all the IPAs, stouts, and lagers out there? Now's the time!

Pick any beer that you think is appropriate to celebrate. Any beer. I think the key is to not overdue it in terms of numbers of beers; take it slow day one (and two and three, for that matter). But that one beer? What's the one beer you've missed the most?

It's been a year - head on over and down to south-central WI. Craft Beer week, May 2-11. I know Surly is going to be in town too, so you will have some homeland brews to choose from as well. Some great food choices around too.

I went a month without any alcohol last year, and I jumped back into with a Stone Vertical Epic 11-11-11, North Coast's Brother T., some wild Irish rose, and went to a dogfish tap takeover. I wouldn't recommend it.

My thoughts are on your recovery. I would have died a year and a day ago. By the way, I'm going with the "any beer you can get your hands on" selection.

Just drink something that tastes good, you shouldn't put too much thought into it.

I experienced that many times, and my answer was the first decent pub I got to, whatever looked the best.
usually had a few chasers lined up....the next day I would be a day I would care what I drank again. Usually my forced lack of drink was due to being out to sea in a ship or boat. Lucky for me most of the time we hit a nice port in UK, in the states it was always a German import in the 1960/1970's. I mean beer will be the same to you, you will just have to decide how much or how little a buzz you want????

Don't worry about building up, start directly with whatever beer you consider your favorite.
