I've been enjoying farmhouse ales this past summer here in Illinois and am looking for some recommendations for the cooler/colder months by the fire. Dubbels?

    Cheers!

Lord yes! A dark, malty, spicy dubbel is the perfect thing for watching the leaves fall...

Affligem, Chimay Red, Russian River Benediction, Allagash Double, off the top of my head.

I personally enjoy Ommegang's Abbey Ale during the winter months. Malty, spiced deliciousness that's readily available and cheaper than its Belgian counterparts.... It's a win-win in my book.

I'm sipping on some Fin du Monde right now (Betcha weren't expecting that given my avatar :stuck_out_tongue:) . It seems like I always get turned onto it more in the fall. I seem to like Tripels or Golden Strongs a lot during the transitions like spring and fall.

Any Dubbel or Belgian Strong Dark goes nice after a big meal and sitting by the fire during the winter time.

Winter? Your answer is St. Bernardus Christmas Ale (honestly, I like it better than the ABT 12).
Fall? Can't go wrong with Ommegang Abbey, Delirium Nocturnum, or a well-aged (2-3 years) Goose Island Pere Jacques. The last, in particular, is a wonderful caramel/toast/sticky dark fruit malt bomb

    They're priced right too...Bernardus around $11 a 750, Ommegang around $8-9 a 750 or $11 a 4-pk of 12oz bottles, Delirium Nocturnum around $12 a 750, and Pere Jacques about $11-12 a 4-pk.

At the risk of sounding like a total douch, I am not ready for the trappist ales until the snow flies.

Personally, I like a nice saison for the fall months. Fruity and citric enough to capture the last memories of summer, but with enough spiciness and dryness to feel appropriate on a chilly fall evening.

Once it gets on towards winter proper, though, bring on the dubbels and the quads! Nothing like a little Rochefort 10 to go with your flaming plum pudding...

Doesn't have to be Trapist, just Belgian per the OP.

So is drinking a Saison out of, well.. "saison" a social faux-pas? I find them just about right for any time of year.

    St. Bernardus Christmas Ale.

The great thing about Dubbles and Quads is how they change as they warm up between 40-55 degrees.

A Belgian Strong Dark Ale is a pleasant cool/cold weather beer. There are many brands out there but permit me to suggest Gulden Draak.

    Cheers!
