I see threads where people want to know if there is a beer that's similar to another beer but is widely available. Thing is a lot of the responses are for beers that you can't get outside of one state or maybe a few. So this is a survey to see what do you think widely available is based on the number of states a beer is distributed in. I realize we could measure widely available on barrelage but this seemed simpler but I'm open to suggestions. cheers.

If it's in AK, ID, MT, ND, OK, SD, and WY, then it must be widely available.

    i'd say 25+ states

i think NJ gets pretty good distribution (we just got Bear Republic!) but we still lack Bell's, Alesmith, Russian River, Half Acre and Cigar City (among others) that PA gets. i just bought Fat Head's Head Hunter in PA for example. thankfully i live 10 minutes from the PA border (yay Beer and Fireworks! no i didn't say that)

BUT if i count the disto of NJ+PA then i can realistically get quite a few great beers.

In the Atlantic South, if you can get it from Tampa to Pensacola and Atlanta to Birmingham to Tampa, it's definitely considered widely available.

"Widely" (for me) = Available in the majority of states in North America which is way more than (20) so I voted "Other". Otherwise, my narrow mind would rather call it "available in a majority of the States in the SW", or "available in a majority of the states on the East Coast", etc., etc.

I would say 25+ when it's only in 10 states it's still regional to me.

No idea. I'm buying all my stock direct from about 5 breweries 98% of the time at this point. Buying widely available beers at a store is so old school.....

Widely available regionally ( which is interesting when polls come up like this and 75% of the responders are from East of the Great Plains)

20 states pretty much ensures that you are, at the very least, within a days drive the acquire.

Not American but will pose the question nonetheless: are SN, Founders, Anchor (the big 3 so to speak) available in the 50 states? I'm only asking for personal knowledge...

If I lived in America, yes probably 25 hence half the States would be fairly available but no beer or brewery was named by the OP.

If it appears here in South Dakota and isn't a local beer, then it has wide distribution since we are usually one of the last states to get distribution. For instance, Stone has said they'll distribute to all 50 states this year, and there has been no announced date yet for SD. Can't complain though since we recently got Bell's, Surly, Ommegang, Hoppin Frog, Oskar Blues, and others.

I'd say a beer is widely available if it can be purchased in all regions of the country even if not in every state within a region. For example, Bell's doesn't distribute in New Jersey but it does in Pennsylvania. Cigar City doesn't distribute here but it does in New York.

Actually, they were (in 2014) #3, 17 and 22 according to the Brewers Association's definition and figures. (After 2015, Founders is no longer on the B.A. "craft" list).

Anchor and Sierra Nevada are national, Founders is not.

That's insightful, thanks. Plus it makes sense because SN and Anchor are more or less available in Europe whereas Founders is almost a treasure.

State-wise, I believe widely would be over at least 50%. So I voted other.
