When you say trade bait, yall arent trading $4$? That's the only way I know. I can't put a price on a 2 year old cellared in my garage small batch brew, or even a road trip to VT that cost me and buddies $2,000. None of that should have any bearing on the "price". But I guess that's why I can't get some of those beers. No one wants the just too cheap to trade Elevated Ipa.

I bought 3 cases of zombie dust a couple weeks back. I kept zero and gave it all to friends that love it.

I doubt you find it surprising that it's quite easy to get rid of cases of Heady ...

I drink it, but my definition of a big haul may differ from some.

During my trip to Vermont earlier this year, I bought 5 growlers from Hill Farmstead, about a half dozen bottles from same, 2 4-packs of Heady, a 4-pack of Lost Nation Gose, and probably 10-15 additional bottles (e.g., SoS), along with a crowler from Prohibition Pig. During the week trip, I drank several of the growlers, several cans of Heady, the crowler, and a smattering of other bottles, as well as a variety of other beers at restaurants, brewpubs, etc. I still stuck to around 2-3 beers a day most days, so I was not going nuts, but I was drinking at a regular pace.

So when I got home, I had several growlers left, which I drank over the course of the next week (all within a week of the visit). I drank the Heady over a few weeks, and bottles and cans periodically since. I still have several bottles from that trip, things that can handle age, but the hop-forward stuff was consumed promptly.

Now, since I take that approach, I'd rarely if ever buy a case. That was about as much as I could reasonably handle. But it was quite a stack of beer when first bought.

I recently got 3 cases of Yuengling (regular, summer, and Oktoberfest). I did give some away, but most are for my consumption.

Drink, trade, drink, drink, trade, drink drink drink. We dont really get large hauls of non-ageable stuff in the midwest, so i sit on a couple of cases of bbpt5, kbs, etc every year. Then trade them, gift them, or drink them. Living up in the NE would be tough with all the world class ipa's. I would be drunk every night

:grimacing:Kuaff's Two* Utilizations for Large Hauls:confused:

    1. Drink them. Within a month... or so. Likely less.
    2. Replenish cellar with cellarables. Drink within whenever.

And so the cycle continues perpetually.

    *Essentially one.

    My Trip to Hill Farm/Vermont
    • 2 cases heady
    • half case sos
    • 5 x cases of hill farm bombers
    • 10 x hill farm growlers
Drank the growlers within 10 days of getting back.
Heady and SoS over the next 2-3 months
1 case of hill farm traded, 1 in long term celler, 3 drank over the following 8 months.

I should note we drove from Chicago so it was worth every penny.

Simple, I drink 90% of it and give the rest away to some fellow craft beers friends who always return the favor when they get something good. My last VT haul was 5 cases of Heady ( plus many others ) which I drank over the next 3 - 4 months. I still have a few left. IMO - The whole " IPA's must be fresh to be good " is completely overblown.

    mwa423,
Since UrbanCaveman doesn't have any friends, can you share some of yours with him? I feel really bad for the dude. He must get super lonely. Thanks.

You pray that those bottles in the trunk are not going to break every time you hit a bump on the way home from vermont. Then you drink every last drop.

My friends and I have no problem enjoying all the beer we bring home from Vt. Sometimes we trade some of it for other beers we have no trouble drinking.

Is there another answer to this?

I only land hauls of high gravity stouts, barleywines, wee heavys or quads. Most of these go directly into the cellar . For example, the past couple years I got a case of BCBS. The unopened case of 2014 is stacked on top of the 2013. I occasionally drink a 2011 and may break out my last couple 2009s over the holidays.

IPAs are best fresh, so no case buys for me. I just bought 2 cases of FBS and will buy one of ST 2XMAS. They will stay in the garage with a window open until spring at which time any remaining will head to the basement. When VAS comes around again, I'll snag a case of it too.

I do this trip every three months or so and always overbuy under the rationale that the sunk costs of the trip are so high the marginal cost of another couple of 4-packs seems trivial. After that it's drink, gift and share. With six sons of various types there are many willing recipients.

Not necessarily a huge haul, but i finally was able to make it to tree house a month ago after wanting to go for so long. I brought back the full allotment allowed on that given day, which was 18 beers total. I gave a few to friends who i knew would enjoy them(sharing beer is one of my favorite things about this hobby) and i'll drink the rest. I still have a few cans of month old tree house ipa's now. Oh the horror!.. Yep still tasting great.

Drink, Share and Trade in that order. Love playing the role of "Beer Evangelist" and giving people beer to try that they may otherwise never have.
