What do you do with the empties?

Good to know, I haven't cut Rogue, mainly because I think the beer they make sucks. But it's most likely just due to their shape and overall thickness of bottles where you do cut. But I'll look into it some more.

 

I'm originally from Connecticut, and we had curbside recycling pickup, I was dumbfounded that there was no state run recycling program when I moved to Indiana. My wife and I cant stand throwing that much stuff out though, so we got a few rubbermaid totes and when they fill up we run to a recycling drop off every other week or so.

 

I recycle everything. I take the labels off and save the caps, all for use in my future bar. The bottle gets taken to recycling. Now that's green!

 

So I used to just recycle all of the empties, no problem, done and done.

Then I got engaged and my future wife moved in with me. She thought we should get the deposit back on all the bottles. Money is money, right?

Ok, I naively said, no problem.

I dutifully waited for the newly dedicated bin to fill up and brought them to the recycling place by the Safeway. Which was closed. Ok, no problem, I'll go the next day, which I did. And the dude was on his lunch break. Fine. I waited an hour and went back, with my twin nine year-olds. There was line. We waited for 25 minutes. For those of you without kids, nine year-olds are just great about waiting in lines. Two of them are twice the fun.

Eventually we turned in our bottles and got our receipt. $4.50. But they guy couldn't pay us. We had to go to a nearby liquor store to get our money. I had to bring my kids to a liquor store to get my four bucks and change.

Upon returning home, quite fired up, I told my fiance that, if she wanted her insignificant amount of money, she could take the bleepin bottles herself.

Needless to say, we now have an overflowing bin full of bottles in the garage. The ones that won't fit go into the recycling and we're right back were we started. Except that part of the garage is now permanently taken up by a bin of bottles.

 

Two daughters! Hey how much more of my personal life do I have to disclose in this thread! I've got two dogs too if you all must know.

Recycle or give to homebrewers.

 

I save half for homebrew, recycle the rest. Usually wind up saving too many for homebrews so some of those go to recycling as well.

 

Crappy picture, but it shows that my shelved/non-shelved empties took up most of a recycling bin Narrowed my shelf displays down to beers that truly blew my mind, or have been instrumental in my understanding and conception of beer. It feels much less cluttered (and much less dusty) in my room now!

 

I thought about saving empty bottles I like but I really prefer bottles full of beer I really like. But I do recycle my bottles and cans.

I am building up a little display on a shelf in my "man cave" comprising of the bottles/cans of each unique beer I try. I'm sitting at around 50 unique pieces right now. On the other hand, everything I don't keep gets recycled.

 

I recycle most of them and give the cool ones to friends of mine who are home brewers.

In college, a representative bottle of each beer was displayed as crappy decoration. I ended up keeping them (only 50 or so) after I graduated. I continued to accumulate bottles over the next few years through graduate school, expecting to one day use them as decoration for my 'man cave'. After packing and moving them all (several hundred at that point), my wife said to get rid of them.

So, I took photos of everything over the course of a few months and recycled. The trash guys must have been like WTF seeing dozens of weird bottles every week for 4 months. It was kind of sad in a way to toss stuff I had been holding onto for 5+ years, but it was the right move.

I still take photos of every new bottle, them recycle. I have around a dozen bottles that I have kept still. I tried to set a criteria; either Top Ten style or some variation. Most of what I have kept are bottles made and available only at local bottle shops. Problem is, I have recycled several in the past that would have fulfilled that criteria. I'm too OCD to let that slip, so I think that In the end, everything will get tossed.

Long answer for a simple question.

 

I really don't think garbage men give a shit about the kinds of beer bottles in your recycling.

There are a handful of the 'best' (imo) beers that I wash out the bottle and keep. Otherwise, they get recycled.

 

Throw them out.

 

Tie them carefully to my rocket with a nice big bow and fire them off into space. They are some other civilizations problem now! The suckers.

Also, I've been known to recycle but only if it's a whale, bro. Gotta let the garbage man know how awesome I am at the beer.
