It's tough say exactly what to look for in a tour without coming down to "it depends..." I have been on dozens of brewery tours; some scheduled, some impromptu / some great, some mediocre. I will say that New Belgium's tour is a must-stop for anyone in Fort Collins - it's in depth, expansive, entertaining, enlightening and a blast. It's also scheduled far in advance with a large group and very impersonal.

I was lucky enough to visit Fremont in Seattle on a day where the power was out and the owner, Matt, happened to come by my booth to chat and then ended up giving me an awesome tour of the place. It was informal and not planned, no glitz and glamour, just the raw brewery experience that included sampling some new stuff straight from the tank. This ended up being one of my most memorable tours to date so it just goes to show you that it just depends on the situation I suppose.

I look for a two and a half hour wait in line for a growler fill of IPA.
