Pine is more light and citrusy, whereas resin is more sap like. It is thick, concentrated, and it lingers. Most piney beers are citrusy and lighter, while other bigger beers ,say some DIPA's, can be more resiny.

I differentiate "resinous" from "piney" as interaction with carmel malts producing deeper flavor and heavier mouthfeel in addition to the pine.

It is beyond pine or other evergreen; a concentrated pine or cedar sap aroma or flavor (or, usually, both).

Resin denotes a certain viscosity and, when applied to beer, has a Pitney taste. This is my interpretation of of the use of "resiny" when referring to beer, not from anything authoritative.

Resin often describes pine-like flavors, but with a sweetness. Depending on the person using the term, it may indicate something like shellac or marijuana (which also gets described as being dank).

I think resin, pine and dank are 3 different tastes. Resin, like the beer can be a little cloying, sweet and sticky - not to my taste. Dank is like the aroma of good weed and piney is - uh, like pine. Torpedo and Celebration are piney to me. Barrier makes great dank ipas.

Better yet, order Whole Leaf Hops and see the Gold/Amber Crystals...those my friend is Resin. Flavors vary from Hop to Hop but mostly very Earthy/Weedy.

Edit: Those Green Nuggets are Bitter as hell though...so use a low Alpha Acid hop and a High Beta Acid Hop variety.

Something similar to pine sap or turpentine, that "piney" flavor.
