The key to extras is buying multiples of cool beers when they come out. The Top 100 never fails either.

I try to go back to the negotiation and see what bottle's were talked about but the trader decided on something else. It's usually a nice surprise. That and my 4 year old's clothes that he out grew. Damn nice packing material.

One thing to remember is that you're essentially making a first impression with each new trade. When you send them something nice as an extra, they remember you. Then, you may get hit-up when they see an ISO you have in the future, or if they're going to a special release of something on your Wants, etc. It goes the other way around too, as I'm likely to keep a lookout for someone that I remember as being a good trader.

Every great box you send out is an opportunity to create a lasting and mutually beneficial/fun trading relationship. I think I just teared up a bit. Sniff sniff.

    Hey y'all,

I'm just getting back on BA (and back into trading) after a long road trip and a few months away from an address. What with this new site, where do you find your prospective trading partner's Wants/Gots list?

    Much appreciated

I try to hit wants first, then toss in local stuff that is not distributed to their area.

Lately I've been throwing in stuff from some of the new, smaller breweries here in St. Louis. Stuff that I know will (probably) never get distributed out of state.

I've thrown in fresh locals to ba plead the 5th and kbs as extras mostly though I've tried to find what styles they like and look to see what they can't get.

But around x-mas I sent out little boxes to people I traded with that had bottles of BA plead the 5th as a nice extra or even to some people I did trades with just unsolicited as a hey remember me. :-) I mean I had plenty to share. The people I've traded with have been generous and super cool.

If its a beer I don't like I give it to the bums I see. They'll drink any thing :-) and are happy to see ya just try driving by later after dropping of a 6 pack of mixed btls to 1 they'll wave and smile.

I think if you trade more you'll find that these people are the exceptions rather than the rule. There are some people like that. For example, the guy who traded me a Splinter Blue sent me one extra, which was a Sweetwater IPA that was six full months past its "Best By" date (and Sweetwater gives a 3 month window, so this was a 9 month old IPA). On the other hand, I've received a couple of boxes where the value of the extras exceeded the value of the traded beer, and which hit multiple wants. Most boxes fall somewhere between these two extremes, but most people seem to try and pull of a combo of locals and wants that is thoughtful and enjoyable. Certainly that is what I've always strove for.

I usually try to hit wants when I send extras. If that is not possible I try to stick to favorite styles. If that isn't an option all bets are off and I just send something ******edly good that I've had in the past and want to share the wealth.

For me it usually depends on the nature of our pre-trade interaction. If there's good conversation and someone is courteous and friendly, I tend to throw in something really nice and unexpected. It all comes back to you.

I try to hit wants and locals. If I am trading with another ticker I will do some research and send beers they haven't reviewed before.

I try to send extras proportionate to the trade. Ie if we agree on a 2 bottle trade, I throw in 2 extras. Obviously this system doesn't work for big trades, but I try to make up with quality. I've put some of my bigger prizes from my cellar as extras in boxes, and I've received some unexpected amazing extras. I'm a firm believer in beer trading karma. You spread the love, you get the love.

Always try to hit a want, then move into solid locals (Daisy Cutter, FFF if they don't have it, etc.)
